I am working in Thailand.   Apart from that, life in my home country was and is boring and frustrating. Lots of old people, and not even a glimmer of hope that the future will be better.

It's all about saving money. I would move out of this dump tomorrow if I could afford to buy a house in my home country.

You can't buy a house here.

You can..... just not the land it sits on.

Sure you can, you just can’t own property as sole ownership.

Thailand is a completely different country from what it was when many of us moved here. I arrived around 2006 when the country was still feeling the effects of the Asian financial crisis. The people were friendly and mostly welcoming. Immigration was a breeze, the cost of living was dirt cheap, and there was plenty of things to do in the parks and elsewhere. They had free Tai Chi, Yuanchi, Thai dancing, social dancing and you could find a friendly companion for 500 baht.

In recent years, however, it's become less and less farang friendly. Two coups, overdevelopment due to the extended cheap credit throughout the world, the invasion of the Chinese, the Arabs, and now the Russians. Immigration crackdowns, the tightening of petty regulations. When I moved here, nobody cared if you filed a 90-day report. It was never asked about when you filed an extension. If you were an American, you could get an income affadavit at the embassy that immigration accepted without a word.  There was no TM 30.

But once you're settled here, it becomes more and more difficult to make a drastic change. Moreover, there are no countries left that are like what Thailand used to be. And I don't know what's happening in America. The cost of living has skyrocketed, everybody is yellling about vaccines and pedophiles, immigrants, and wokeness, and whatever ands our leaders are all senescent.

Even though Thailand has become a lot less attractive, where is it better?

Yes & no ...

... considerably more expensive, which affects the locals mood

... inflation across the board, but not as much as USA, % up wise

... so many more tourist, the bad are noticed more, and in social media

... aside from bad folks, I completely avoid touristy area, too congested

... 2000 arrival, and don't remember paying or dual pricing for most parks

... Imm crackdown/enforcement, due to the scammer & agent user

rules really haven't change, but strictly enforced, still easy to stay

here if married or retired & meet the financials

Out of tourist areas, and locally, everyone is the same.

Imm a breeze, but sh!t has to be in order.

Still plenty of inexpensive O&A, but off the beaten track

A lot more coffee shops, and shopping improved greatly

Can get anything now, though some items are pricey, but at least available

He spends $45 a week on food and claims to be rich.

Isn't it obvious why people like Thailand? Cheap restaurants, cheap rooms, women, men, ladyboys for all tastes, tropical climate all year. Stupid question really. Your $45 a week budget on food buys tinned products. That budget buys restaurant food in Thailand.

A single person estimated monthly costs are 1,921.5$ (1,789.7€) without rent. Cost of living in Monaco is, on average, 60.8% higher than in United States. Rent in Monaco is, on average, 464.8% higher than in United States.

Maybe one small piece of chicken or a basic sausage made of muck. But even then not easy.

Look I am old, and I don't eat a lot but we, my wife and I went shopping a couple of days ago we spent 117$ AUD for about 2 weeks and she bought a huge piece of pork (I guess about 2 kg) I am not complaining at all. Yes, I must admit food is not cheap anymore for big families because you are getting ripped off by big companies. But they make the wrong choices. As you know I am in the West now and can't compare with the food prices in Thailand but how much do they make in Thailand? My wife is a nurse in a big hospital she can make up to 65 $ AUD per hour!! Compared to 400 baht per day. But I don't want to get into that, I know all you guys living in Thailand love it, I did as well, but with no real income at all we moved back to OZ.  Not a Thai trashing

60 $ a week for 2 people,that's cheaper than Thailand !!

  • 3 weeks later...

Why do I live in Thailand?  Why not? In Thailand, I currently have the most laid back, non-drama existence you could imagine.  I could go back to the USA tomorrow morning, but why? I’be been there, I’ve done that.  I had pretty much everything you could imagine,  but I wanted a change.  So, here I am.
