Public encouraged to stay vigilant as COVID infections rises

The number of COVID-19 patients being admitted to hospitals in Thailand has risen to 2,762 between June 2 and 8, or an average of 395 patients daily. This figure is an increase from the previous week, which saw 1,863 cases, as reported by the COVID-19 Information Centre.

 

The nation also reported five deaths during that week, taking the total death toll for the year to 137.

 

Dr. Thira Woratanarat from Chulalongkorn University's Faculty of Medicine cautioned the public via a Facebook post. Due to a 48.3% increase in COVID-19 related hospital admissions from the past week, he advised people to remain vigilant and take care of their health.

 

In other news, the Centre for Medical Genomics at Mahidol University made an announcement on its website about a new vaccine, KP.2. This vaccine has the potential to strengthen the immune system against new COVID variants and is anticipated to be approved for usage in the 2024-25 season.

 

The centre stated that the new vaccine marks a significant step towards battling COVID mutations and is expected to curb the global infection rates.

Interesting that BP ran an article last week citing a virologist from Chulalongkorn University who said that boosters are no longer necessary for healthy people because the symptoms are generally mild. I've been saying for a very long time now. It's Omicron and Omicron is doing what Omicron does. It evolves. It evolves so it can infect people that have gained some natural immunity. This is called immune escape. People will gain natural immunity with this variant and then this variant will evolve immune escape. So it goes on. It cannot be stopped and it could never be stopped. Zero Covid 19 was a complete smokescreen and never attainable.

if the total weekly deaths were 12 a few weeks ago and now it is 5 that is a huge drop. one could even say the death rate plummeted.

 

so with that in mind it matters not about hospital admission numbers. the death rate still remains very very very low.... and that's the most important part.

Also worth bearing in mind comorbidities and incidental cases. This has been an endemic non-severe virus for a very long time now but sadly the narrative still gets pushed and believed.

I know of at least 3 people who have recently got covid.  So it is spreading a lot right now.  A friends Thai wife got it after going to a private hospital for a checkup. (they think that is where she may have been exposed but it could have been anywhere)  He now has it too. 

A close friend of ours that owns a restaurant has a nephew that lives with her.  Yesterday she told us he has covid.  He works in the local Tessaban office and most likely got exposed there.  I told her she has probably been exposed to it too then.  But she is in denial.  Which I guess may mean the wife and I have now been exposed to it also.  I guess we will find out in a few days.

 

Over a year ago the wife and I got covid from our niece while taking a vacation in Chiang Mai.  It wasn't that bad.  Like having a bad cold for a few days.

From the responses above it is clear that those posters have woken up to the scam and will not be rolling up their sleeves again for their next 'protection' COVID-booster.  Obviously that worldwide phenomenon has already triggered a double-pronged response from the vaccinators: 

- combining the Flu and COVID jabs in one shot;

- stoking up the fear for the next pandemic, and since COVID has lost much of its fear-factor it's now Bird Flu.

It's very good that Thailand is still reporting very low COVID death numbers, though also worth mentioning that this latest weekly report included two COVID deaths in the 50-59 age range, and other recent weekly death reports have listed people from even younger age groups.

 

The latest weekly report also listed 663 people hospitalized in serious condition with COVID, and 286 requiring ventilation in order to breathe -- both close to year-high numbers for 2024.

 

In my book, anyone dismissing those kinds of impacts has long missed the boat.  No one should want to be hospitalized in serious condition or have to be relying on a ventilator to breathe -- especially when many of those cases could have been avoided/prevented.

 

 

Also regarding COVID deaths in Thailand, there's been no clear trend over time. The weekly COVID death numbers bounce around a lot.

 

A few weeks ago, the weekly official COVID numbers were 12, 11 and 16... A few weeks before that, they were 3, 4 and 3.

I was out on Sunday for a bit of lunch when I saw a farang couple pull up in the car park of the restaurant, fully masked up. They walked into the restaurant and took their masks off surrounded by strangers.......

 

So yes, mental illness must be a factor with COVID.

Well, he knows what his risk factors are. He could have an comprised immune system. Although covid transmission outside is rare.

 

Something new I found out about covid. Covid could accelerate cancer.

Very true. The mortality rate is super low. One would appear to have to be very susceptible, to croak from this weak variant. 

 

I let it go a couple of years ago. So has most of the world. It actually looks strange when you see someone with a mask these days. How refreshing is that? 

 

This has turned out to not be the Zombie Apocalypse.

Unproven connection yet... But a concern that the scientists are studying...  There is established medical knowledge that other viral infections can and do trigger cancer development...

totally agree with you.  

on a different, but similar note... a few years ago i argued with someone that burying the bird flu infected poultry was not the solution an that one day the virus would mutate and come back... i told this guy the only solution was fire. he ridiculed me. now, there are new strains coming out with a vengeance...

I still see plenty of Thais do that but haven't observed a foreigner/expat do that.
