A concrete dam located in Khon Kaen, Thailand with a span of 18 years, has suffered a crack as a result of water erosion from a nearby reservoir. The crack has resulted in a 20-meter opening, and the authorities are currently undertaking repair works to prevent further deterioration.

Situated in Ban Loeng, Khon Kaen, construction of the dam was completed in 2006 and has been under the care of the local administration since then. The current damage is blamed on the substantial water pressure from the Nong Loeng Yai Reservoir which resulted in the wear and tear of the dam leading to a massive hole. The scenario led to the immediate attention of the local authorities who were quick to evaluate the damage and plot a course of action.

The damage to the dam, estimated to be around 20 meters wide, permitted a large flow of water to gush out, leading to the collapse of earth and concrete walls. Comprehensive field checks were carried out by local law enforcement, including Mueang Khon Kaen District Chief, Chinakorn Kaenkong, and local disaster prevention office head, Tanak Sak Roypha, along with military officials from Sri Patcharin Camp.

The immediate strategy involves controlling the flow of water from Nong Loeng Yai to stop any further damage to the Lum Phong stream, which is critical for the daily needs of the local community. Large sandbags sourced from the private sectors are being used to temporarily block the water flow. If the sandbags are inadequate, gabion boxes will be employed to seal the hole. Members from the 23rd Military Circle at Sri Patcharin Camp, along with volunteers, are on-site assisting with repair works.

Officials remain hopeful that the gap in the dam can be sealed by tonight with the resources and manpower that are currently in hand. Despite this incident, local homes and farm areas are not affected thanks to the water from the dam being directed towards Lum Phong, which can handle the increased water volume.

Local residents around Nong Loeng Yai who rely on this water for their day-to-day needs remain the primary concern. The local administration is working round the clock to ensure the disturbance is as minimum as possible and water supply for consumption and other usage is normalised at the earliest.

Efforts to liaise with the private sector for large sandbags are underway; gabion boxes will be used if needed. Confidence remains high that the situation will be controlled effectively with the support of the military and available equipment.

Typical Thailand do not know what the word maintenance

"Comprehensive field checks were carried out by local law enforcement", What the hell do local law enforcement know about concrete dams

I think there's a chronic shortage of properly qualified engineers here. I would assume they go abroad for much higher wages, more professional environment to work in, and much better experience. Looking at most roadworks in Pattaya for instance, it's hard to believe there's a fully qualified engineering mind behind the cracks and holes that appear within months of "completion". Mr Nampichet where are you? Can we please have a facility here in Pattaya such as they have in Bangkok for reporting problems with civic amenities?

Yes, other pictures of the breach show little or no maintenance since the dam was built.  It wouldn't be unusual for the local officials in charge of maintaing it pocketed the money allocated for it's upkeep.

The high ways even start to fall down, meanwhile in Vietnam a pegoda from the year 500 still stands as well as a Taoist temple from the year 1200. To not mention the countless of other buildings since hundreds of years.
