A tragic incident has occurred, where a female police officer, along with her two daughters, was found dead in the bathroom of their home. The cause of death is suspected to be exposure to caustic soda.

At around 13:00 PM on August 12, Police Lieutenant Kajphasut Prowatsirigul, Deputy Inspector (Investigation) at Mueang Chonburi Police Station, received a report of an incident at a residence in Bang Pla Soi Subdistrict, Mueang District, Chonburi. Upon being informed, Police Colonel Supharuk Yuiprai, Superintendent of Mueang Chonburi Police Station, proceeded to the scene with medical staff from Chonburi Hospital and rescuers from the Thammarat Mani Rattanathorn Foundation.

The incident took place at a two-story police officer’s residence at Mueang Chonburi Police Station. Inside the ground-floor bathroom, the bodies of three females were found lying together. The deceased were identified as a 60-year-old female Police Lieutenant Colonel (mother), Ms. J, 34 (eldest daughter), and Ms. P, 25 (youngest daughter). All were found with foaming at the mouth, bluish lips, and nails. Rescue workers and medical personnel attempted to resuscitate them, but the three ultimately succumbed to the effects of the caustic soda.

A strong odor of caustic soda permeated the residence, and the police prohibited anyone from entering the premises. According to an inquiry by Police Colonel Supharuk Yuiprai, a close friend of the eldest daughter, revealed that she had visited her friend the previous day at 15:00, after earlier that morning, the mother, had asked her to buy caustic soda to pour down the clogged bathroom drain. The friend, on August 12, found no one responding to her calls, so she went to the home to check and on opening the bathroom door, discovered the three bodies lying together. She immediately sought help from a neighbour.

The police have initially sent the bodies for autopsy at Chonburi Hospital to determine whether caustic soda was present in their stomachs, which will help ascertain whether the incident was accidental or intentional. Investigators will also question close colleagues of the deceased to determine if there were any unresolved issues or personal problems that the deceased might have confided in.

A close colleague of the deceased, mentioned that the Lt. Col. was due to retire next month, in September, and was known to deeply love her daughters. The colleague expressed disbelief that she would take her own life. The colleague was unaware of any personal debts or financial issues.

It is speculated that the officer may have poured caustic soda into the bathroom drain and closed the door. The younger daughter might have entered the bathroom, inhaling the caustic soda fumes and losing consciousness. The mother and older sister could have entered the bathroom to assist, but also succumbed to the fumes, leading to the tragic outcome. However, the exact cause of death will be determined pending further autopsy results from Chonburi Hospital.

No Conclusion Yet on Caustic Soda as Cause of Death for Mother and Two Daughters

Picture of the bottle reported to contain caustic soda

The investigation into the tragic deaths of a 60-year-old female police lieutenant and her two daughters, aged 34 and 25, in a bathroom in Mueang District, Chonburi, continues. Initially, it was suspected that the cause of death might have been the effects of caustic soda, as the victims were found with frothing at the mouth and bluish lips and nails. A strong odor of caustic soda was detected inside the house.

In the latest developments, forensic experts were at the scene to gather evidence. They meticulously collected fingerprints from various locations within the house, including a bottle of drain cleaner found at the scene. Authorities have cordoned off the area to prevent anyone from entering, concerned about the potential dangers posed by lingering toxic substances.

Meanwhile, relatives of the deceased entered the home to rescue ten cats that were being kept there. All of the cats were safely removed and will be cared for by family members.

Later, Police Major General Chatchai Surachetpong, Deputy Commissioner of Region 2 Police, visited the scene to inspect the drain cleaner bottle personally. He ordered a thorough investigation into the source and composition of the cleaner before allowing further access to the house.

Maj. Gen. Chatchai commented after the inspection, stating that it is possible the victims were exposed to harmful substances in the drain cleaner. He emphasised that a detailed timeline of events is being established, and more time is needed to determine whether any additional factors were involved. At present, no clear motive has been identified. Samples of the cleaning substance are being analysed to determine their components and whether they were legally available for purchase. Two police officers at the scene also exhibited symptoms of nausea and dizziness and have been sent to the hospital for medical evaluation.

Associate Professor Dr. Weerachai Phutthawong, a chemistry professor at the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Science at Kasetsart University, expressed skepticism about the initial assumption that caustic soda alone caused the deaths. He noted that sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) does not emit a strong odor but is highly corrosive. Death from inhalation of this substance alone is unlikely.

However, Dr. Weerachai added, “If caustic soda is mixed with other chemicals, such as bathroom cleaner or bleach, it can trigger a chemical reaction that produces a strong, pungent odor. In a confined space like a bathroom, inhaling large quantities of such fumes could lead to unconsciousness or death.”

Just a chance it could be a tragic accident?...... Not everyone knows that certain household chemicals, when mixed, will react to give off toxic fumes.

Can't say I have ever heard of anyone dying of fumes of caustic soda? Ingesting it, yes. How about opening a window or door, before using it? Especially if you are coughing and have your eyes turning red raw.

More to the point, one after another went into the bathroom after not hearing anything from the predecessor.

A final trilogy... something underlying here.

the story is quite unbelievable.

this must have been some strong chemical to act this fast while the doors were open (I assume they all were open, that's what Thai police usually does).

I would think that if smelling such an odor and trying to rescue a downed person in the bathroom, I would hold my breath for the time it takes me to drag that person out.

...

one thing the police should look for is if the bathroom door can be locked and unlocked from the outside.

Picture CCTV from the store.

Media reports, suggest that CCTV footage revealed details, involving the close friend of the officer’s eldest daughter. The footage shows the friend driving a black sedan to purchase a specific brand of drain cleaner at a hardware store along Phra Ya Satja Road in Ban Suan Subdistrict, Mueang District, Chonburi Province.

In the CCTV footage, the friend is seen parking her car in front of the store, exiting the vehicle, and entering the store to purchase the drain cleaner. She then proceeds to the checkout counter, with a store employee following her throughout. At the counter, the store owner is heard warning the friend about the dangers of mixing the cleaner with caustic soda, as the combination could cause a hazardous situation. The friend appeared to understand and acknowledge the advice. She then scanned her payment for the item, left the store, got back into her black sedan, and drove away.

Having inhaled the fumes, I can't imagine it was an accident. It's not like you don't notice it, and the first breath of it hurts.

No witnesses, so we have a cop speculating... geez, don't they have any empathy, simply a souless cop.

What are they supposed to do? Speculating is part of most any investigation.

Knowing they are not the brightest here + always do everything together as a team, I am not that doubtful over it being an accident at all. I've seen crazier things, like people cooking on electric cookers with cables in 20cm water, as the area being flooded.

I notice they use....what I understand to be liquid fuel pipes........ for piping gas from gas cylinders....!!!!

Picture from press conference

The afternoon of August 13, Police Lieutenant General Trirong Phiwphan, Commissioner of the Police Forensic Science Office, Royal Thai Police, provided an update on the investigation into a recent incident. Forensic officers were dispatched to the scene following a report, where they gathered crucial evidence and information from witnesses.

Witnesses revealed that before the incident, a household member had purchased a drain cleaner to resolve a blockage in the bathroom. The product, described as being in an opaque white bottle with a red cap, was later found by forensic officers in a trash bin, with some liquid remaining at the bottom. In the bathroom, four partially used bottles of a common bathroom cleaning product were also discovered.

According to Lt. Gen. Trirong, witnesses indicated that the drain cleaner had been used about three hours before the officers arrived. Upon inspection, the officers detected a strong burning odor and experienced irritation to their eyes and noses.

The bathroom in question is small, measuring 1.2 meters wide, 2.5 meters long, and 2.05 meters high, with only one ventilation window approximately 40 centimeters wide. The bathroom door opens inward, leading to the hypothesis that if someone fainted inside, anyone attempting to help would need to close the door first to help them, so potentially inhaling hazardous chemicals.

Further investigation led officers to purchase the same brand of drain cleaner for testing. It was found to contain a highly concentrated black sulfuric acid, which should not be mixed with alkaline substances, such as caustic soda. When combined with a blockage, the mixture could produce toxic hydrogen sulfide gas, which has been known to cause fatalities in the past.

Pol. Col. Wiphawadi Kasemworabhum, a scientist from the Chemical and Physical Inspection Group of the Central Institute of Forensic Science, revealed that from academic reports, the amount of hydrogen sulfide gas that is harmful to health has many levels. A level of 50 ppm will cause eye irritation and inflammation of the respiratory tract. However, if the gas is at a level of 500 ppm, it will cause nausea and loss of consciousness. If it exceeds 500 ppm, it will cause lack of oxygen and sudden respiratory arrest.

Lt. Gen. Trirong concluded by stating that the exact cause of death is still pending a detailed autopsy report, but Initial findings show that it was not related to 'caustic soda' and that no burn marks were found in the mouths. If the fatality is linked to the use of the drain cleaner, legal action for damages may be pursued under the law

THe stuf cant kill you. OK you shoudnt drink it. White crystals and very solvable in water, can burn skin.

However it is a base and can easily react with other substances and create gasses.

Amazing I see an officer with a dust mouth cap on in the room, yha right that will work, NOT.

Guess the photographer is also such a dumb*ss. A miracle they are still alive.

I red and first thing popping up is cyanide !

Googled blue lips and fingers + foam on mouth, cyonasis ! Cyanide!

No clue what was mixed together, but they created a chemical reaction with cyanide gas coming free.

And that WILL kill you.

H2S kills but in higher concentrations and you mostly then dont smell, your common fart is H2S.

however in Songkhla the concentration (maybe not all H2S, but with CO and other gasses, sewer gasses) was high enough and costed 4 peoples lives.

If you mic sulfuric acid with NaOH, you will get a salt Na2SO4 and water. However it is an exotherm reaction(heat is coming from reaction) and H2S as gas can be releaved.

But this one with purple lips , fingers and foam ...cyanide.

The chemical doctors should know.

Maybe they had chucked a load of random stuff down the drain to try to clear it, went out and got this new stuff, then poured it straight down the drain and it mixed with whatever else was down there.

Why they all died is another question, but, like others said, it's not too crazy to think that they went in there one at a time, each to help the previous person, and all succumbed to the fumes.

Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) is extremely deadly,

100-150

Loss of smell (olfactory fatigue or paralysis).

500-700

Staggering, collapse in 5 minutes. Serious damage to the eyes in 30 minutes. Death after 30-60 minutes.

700-1000

Rapid unconsciousness, "knockdown" or immediate collapse within 1 to 2 breaths, breathing stops, death within minutes.

1000-2000

Nearly instant death

Possibly whoever poured the cleaner in, got a hit at better then 1000ppm , collapsed, victim 2 walks in same thing victim 3 walks in, but because of the other 2 when she collapses due to the size of the bathroom falls against the door closing it.

If the door were open, would people not smell it from outside the bathroom?

It is a terrible smell, and you can feel it damaging you.
