Picture from the video of the incident.

In an incident that has captured widespread attention, a young teacher experienced a frightening encounter with a venomous cobra that slithered into his trousers during a school demonstration in Bueng Kan Province. The terrifying moment required immense composure, quick thinking, and a steady hand to avoid what could have been a fatal snakebite.

Mr. Nirut Chomngam, the head of the Oraphitwiwataya (Ophidiology) group, recounted the incident, which was recorded and shared by a volunteer from the group. The clip serves as both a chilling reminder of the dangers involved in working with venomous snakes and an important lesson in handling such situations.

According to Mr. Nirut, a volunteer named Wave was conducting a snake awareness session at a local school in Bueng Kan. During the demonstration, another staff member released a spitting cobra from its container to help students identify different species of snakes. As the snake handler attempted to hold the cobra by its tail to display its hood to the students, the snake suddenly escaped and slithered towards the handler's ankle, then up into his trousers.

The video shows the handler remaining extraordinarily calm as the cobra moved higher up inside his trousers. A single mistake or sudden movement could have startled the snake, leading to a potentially deadly bite. Demonstrating remarkable composure, Wave carefully began to remove his pants from the top down, slowly enough to avoid alarming the snake. The cobra continued to search for a hiding spot within the trousers, making the situation even more dangerous.

After what seemed like an eternity, the handler located the snake’s head and cautiously maneuvered the fabric until the cobra's head emerged in a position where it could be safely grasped and removed. The crisis was averted, and the snake was eventually captured without causing harm to anyone involved.

Reflecting on the incident, Wave acknowledged that it was a major learning experience. While all parties were unharmed, he recognised the seriousness of the error and emphasised the need for greater caution in future demonstrations.

Mr. Nirut further explained that while it is generally advised to remain still when encountering a snake at close range, this situation highlighted the importance of not only staying calm but also making deliberate and precise decisions. He advised that when dealing with snakes at a distance of two to three metres, it is safer to slowly back away rather than remain motionless. In cases where a snake is actively approaching, the best course of action is to try to move away to a safer location.

How on earth did those blue pants not turn brown? that's what you call amazing Thailand🤔

Bicycle clips. :coffee1:

oh dear Georgealbert ,     so that is what's meant when they say trouser snake ...  haha

lucky he had his blue underwear on that day and not something skimp.

They should have called in the experts from soi 6 to handle that one.

They handle snakes in trousers on a daily basis, usually so quickly that the snake doesn’t even see the hand coming, very firm grip, the snake has no chance of escape.

Spitting cobras is their specialty and no need for the safety sunglasses either.

And masters of sucking the poison out safely.

Is that a snake in your pants or are you just happy to see me?

I am so admirative that I can't think of any silly joke to make here.

Jeez...

Perhaps it was mating season and the cobra was interested in the snake hiding in the mans drawers. Seems it did not crawl up there to have a bite though. Luckily, it was a thai teacher so maybe the cobra thought the snake in his drawers was still a baby. Hmm..
