Don’t kill the golden goose! Tax reforms may drive away expats
The tax base is a low 25% of the workforce, any Revenue Dept would be crazy not to want to expand that. But that doesn't necessarily imply they will do so by adding the foreign community, it's far more probable tp think they want to tackle the Thai sector. -

Reminder for 90 day online report does not work(?)
Did you file online ~ more than 75 days ago? Or did you leave and reenter the country, after which the 90-day clock starts ticking again. There was a period of time when the email reminder system was not working - I know I did not receive one. No clue if that's the case again. If you think you're in the window then just apply. AFAIK, no. You just need a current/valid TM30 on file. -

Gun Violence: The Leading Cause of Child and Teen Deaths for the Third Year
Not sure you can blame the 'guns', same as you can't blame vehicles for the 'MVA deaths'. Blame the .... ... breakdown of the family ... drugs ... turf wars ... open borders, for the drugs mainly, and the drug cartel members running the streets You could even bring all those military personal overseas home, that are playing corporate security, to patrol the border and give ICE a hand. Along with all the foreign aid that could be spent on citizens of the USA, instead of giving to countries that hate the USA. Give the parents some assistance, and the kids some better options in life. Simple solutions to simple problem that the elected are suppose to provide for their constituents, instead of lining their pockets with kickbacks and inside trading. Just a thought, but hey, the ignorant sheeple keep reelected the same corrupt folks that have the best commercial. Som nam naa Products don't usually kill people, people kill people. Taking guns away from legal owners, won't stop much of the deaths. Enforcing current laws would help, just a wee bit. Close the last few loopholes in a few states. But most is up to people, raising their children properly and teaching them the value of life and how to be responsible citizens. -

New construction? Well looks like poor quality, and I hope the Thai people involved to to jail and face fines for their shoddy work. -

Don’t kill the golden goose! Tax reforms may drive away expats
We'll see. What everyone seems to forget is that for many years now, foreign income remitted in the same year earned has been liable for tax. Expats collectively have done this with abandon, and remitted large sums, billions of baht. No enforcement. Alongside this, the vast majority of non-working expats have never filed a tax return in Thailand. No enforcement. A single interpretation on timing of remitting foreign income changes, causing media and forum hysteria. No reports of any planned or actual changes in operational practices or enforcement. At this point, the most likely outcome looks to me- to be changes only in self enforcement! As you say, good luck to all. -

Deputy PM Anutin Makes Urgent Trip to Nong Khai, Apologises for Flooding Difficulties
Nobody mentions the real reasons for the yearly repeating floods (albeit this year a tad more than usual) . The officially supervising body, the Mekong River Commission (MRC), is an UN-entity with its head office far away from any action - in Geneva/Switzerland Regretfully the MRC is an absolute waste of money and a toothless tiger more. The MRC was created to serve as a platform for all countries, through which the Mekong flows or borders the river. Unfortunately the most important partner, China, remains absent and is not a member of the MRC. The Chinese do not even know the Mekong, they call it "Lancang Jiang". So, whatever those overpaid incompetent diplomats say, write or think - it is nothing but hot air, if the proverbial manure hits the fan. The main reason for the floods are the dams and their management. Thailand has had local disasters due to incompetent dam managements some 10+ years ago - more than once. The Chinese are much worse as they have more dams and those dams are much bigger. To operate a dam is actually quite simple; let me share the following example: 100 units = total capacity of the dam 20 units = remaining water volume at the end of April (shortly before the rainy seasons start) 80 units = required water to be stored in the dam - in line with the end of the second rainy season Thailand has fantastic historical data dating back to 1865 and hence can pretty much forecast the water to be expected in an upcoming rainy season. To stay with the above example, lets assume the following: 80 units = required water to be stored in the dam - in line with the end of the second rainy season 120 units = expected water volume - or 40 units more than needed So they get 120/80 of what they actually need and have to release 40 - over a time span of six months. The formula hence is, that you release 40/120 (or one third) TODAY of the rainfall of YESTERDAY. If you release 1/3 of yesterday's rain - on a daily basis - you reach your target for sure, by the end of the rainy season you can even fine tune the release and achieve a water level of 98%. The present modus operandi is, that at the beginning of the rainy season they close the valves to fill up the dams as fast as possible (one never knows, right?). Given the fact, that 1/3 of the rain will fall in the last quarter of the rainy season, you will get most water towards the end. Now, if you fill up dams as soon as possible, they will be full once the last third of the rain falls in the last quarter of the rainy season. This forces the dam operators to release LOTS of water during the heaviest rain falls. Result is .... floods everywhere. The Lao dams reported 98% - 100% levels of water since July 2024! This explains most of the yearly mess along the Mekong and this concern is being shared with the Chinese for the last +/- 15 years. But, as all the countries in this part of the world are hand fed in one or the other way by China or being enslaved by China (Laos and Cambodia spring to mind and they work on Myanmar while we speak), nobody dares to address the issue in such a way, that the Chinese would listen or even feel the pain. The world's bodies - like the MRC - remain irrelevant clubs of fancy cocktails and diplomatic privileges and the rest is nature's choice - at least that is, what they tell all those farmers and fisher along the Mekong who have no voice, no say and - in most cases - cannot understand what really happens. So they see monks and fortune tellers, who make the misery go away ........ until next year. Get professionals to manage the dams and step properly onto Chinese toes until they get the message - everything else will change nothing and is a waste of time, resources and human tragedies - me thinks! -

Pheu Thai Party Wins By-Election in Phitsanulok
FILE - Thailand's new Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra talks to media members after receiving a royal letter of endorsement for the post at the Pheu Thai party headquarters in Bangkok, Thailand, on Aug. 18, 2024. (AP Photo/Sakchai Lalit, File) The Pheu Thai Party has secured a significant victory in Phitsanulok’s Constituency 1 by-election, as their candidate Jadet Jantar triumphed over Natachanon Chanaburanasak from the People’s Party. This marks the first electoral win for the ruling party in this northern province in many years. Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsuthin, a key figure in the Pheu Thai Party, highlighted the importance of Jadet’s win on Sunday night. Jadet’s victory by more than 6,000 votes is seen as an endorsement of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra’s leadership. "This is not just a victory in Phitsanulok. People across the country look to the prime minister as a beacon of hope," Somsak stated, celebrating with other prominent party members as the unofficial vote count concluded. Somsak noted that Pheu Thai had not won in Phitsanulok for nearly two decades. The recent victory, he argued, reflects growing trust in the prime minister. He expressed gratitude to the voters for their support. Jadet Jantar revealed that the prime minister personally called to congratulate him. He vowed to serve his constituents to the best of his abilities. Natachanon Chanaburanasak of the People’s Party gracefully conceded defeat, expressing gratitude to the approximately 30,000 people who voted for him. Despite the loss, he remains committed to serving the province. People’s Party secretary-general Sarayuth Jailak acknowledged the defeat but indicated that the party would continue to build its base and prepare for future elections. The Election Commission’s unofficial count showed Jadet winning with 35,209 votes, while Natachanon garnered 30,640 votes. Out of 138,705 eligible voters in Constituency 1, the voter turnout was recorded at 54.95 percent. This election result is a notable milestone for the Pheu Thai Party and highlights shifting political dynamics in Phitsanulok. -- 2024-09-16 -

Jeremy Bowen Defends BBC Amid Allegations of Bias Over Israel-Hamas Coverage
Defund them. In today's media landscape, forcing people to pay for a left wing propaganda machine that they don't even want is ridiculous. Let them get private funding, then they can justify the actions of Hamas as much as they like. Britain's two tier justice system will ensure they face no legal action for such a stance, especially while Sadiq Khan runs The Met (into the ground).- 1
