car accident while intoxicated insurance coverage for victims

Featured Replies

Hi folks, I just saw on thai news that some drunk dude crashed to like 19 cars,

but he was on 1st class insurance and the news reported that the insurance covers for damage except for his vehicle due to hes intoxicated.

is that really the case anyone know?

That sounds about right.

The insurance can then ‘go after him’ and file charges to recover the costs of paying out for other vehicles as he was driving illegally.

My friend’s wife crashed, there fortune in the early hours of the morning into a bridge parapet, she was drunk, she called the insurance company (Viriyah) and they asked her to go to a hospital for a blood test, which she did at 7 AM and consequently they wouldn’t pay for the repairs.

You are not insured if your alcohol content is over the limit, I expect something similar to to happen with cannabis next year, in the UK you fail the drug test within 36 hours or so of smoking cannabis.

I thought there was some crazy law with insurance companies here that even if drunk they will pay out for damage you have caused , as it is the car technically that is insured in their eyes not so much the driver .

I had a motorbike accident one morning around 9am on the way to the gym.

I don't drink alcohol, but at the hospital, my blood was tested for alcohol for the insurance company.

I think an alcohol blood test is pretty much standard now after hospitalisation for any road accident in any private hospital. The insurance companies don't want the big payouts if they can avoid it.

Can't imagine for the life of me any insurance company paying out if you are DUI......it's difficult to get the payout at the best of times.

Usually, the policy holder is compensated by their own insurance company. If you're hit you file a claim with your insurance company only (with pictures, police report & any evidence). Any payment would come through your own insurance company depending on whether the claim was approved or not.
