Parents and guardians of students in Samut Prakan province near Bangkok are seeking justice after soldiers brutally abused students during a behaviour modification camp on military premises in Chon Buri province.

Bangpleeratbamrung School in Samut Prakan sent 130 students to the behaviour modification camp after they violated school rules by smoking, fighting, engaging in altercations over romantic matters, arriving late to school, and more.

The camp, operated by soldiers at Phra Maha Jetsadaratchao Camp in Sattahip district, Chon Buri, ran for three days and two nights, from 25 to 27 September, to correct the students’ negative behaviour.

The brutal treatment at the camp came to light after the students returned home and shared their experiences with their parents and guardians.

They reported that the soldiers at the camp kicked and slapped them. Some were forced to eat grass and rotten fruit, while others were given humiliating haircuts, which resulted in head injuries.

One mother told Channel 7 that her 17 year old son was kicked in the back, leaving him struggling to breathe and causing him to have a seizure. Instead of helping the boy, the soldiers shouted vulgar insults at him.

Another father disclosed that his 18 year old son was slapped for looking at the soldiers, while another guardian shared that his nephew was distressed after being kicked for dropping his bag. The nephew also complained that his family no longer loved him for allowing him to be tortured at the camp.

Parents dissatisfied

Students who attended the camp revealed to the media that one of their peers tried to defend others by asking the soldiers why they were being abused. This student did not receive an answer and was instead slapped in the face for questioning them.

Families brought the matter to the school but the school denied the accusations, claiming the students were lying. The deputy headteacher even dared the families to sue the school if they had evidence and threatened to counter-sue, causing some families to drop their complaints.

However, another group of guardians persisted and took legal action against the school and the military trainers. Their complaints led to an urgent meeting on September 30, attended by the head of the military trainers, teachers, the victims, and their guardians.

The lead military trainer apologised to the families and promised to investigate the incident. The teachers and school directors also apologised to the families. The school director promised that no more students would be sent to military or behaviour modification camps and that alternative activities within the school would be arranged to avoid such violence.

Channel 7 reported that many of the victims’ families were dissatisfied with the meeting’s outcome, as their children had suffered both physical and mental injuries. They called for a quicker investigation and greater accountability from the school.

As I wrote in another article ... another mai pen rai attitude... They have to listen and do as they are told as we all do and all being frustrated.... Shameful that this can happen in the 21st century, but I forgot . Thailand is at least 75 years behind

I have to admit I am surprised that such camps exist at all in Thailand.

Soldiers and behaviour modification camp on military premises for students, really?

This is how the Soldiers are treated when in training, it's to be expected they will carry this behavior on, it's normal for them to bully and torture, its all they know.

I wonder how many parents, if asked in private, would agree to such punishments.

It seems many parents think the teachers and soldiers should do the job which the parents failed to do.

Good. Now start doing it with the 12 and 13 year olds.

Beat them until they stop acting like little sh!ts.

Why not just beat them to death, in the first place Jeff ? that would seem to fit into your way of thinking. Soldiers should not be disciplining kids in the first place look how they treat their own recruits, many have died being 'Trained'.

If they are lucky enough they will be able to take part in any future coup, maybe even get to murder students on campus without repercussions.

Probably fatal beatings by the headmaster.

Did they mean concentration camps?

Obviously many of those students' 'negative behaviours' are caused by their parents - who think that their little Johnny cannot be slapped or have his hair cut. Oh the humanity - imagine them being yelled at and their phones taken away.

I think the soldiers that kicked that one particularly annoying little sheeiit in the back, who probably told them to go copulate themselves, were very restrained.   If the 'lessons' were conducted on a military base, there is nothing the parents can do - they are not subject to normal laws about using force to control someone with bad behaviours.  The school might get into trouble - but lets hope the school bosses dont back down and they ignore the media hysterics and parent's outrage. Tell them to take their little Johnny to another school - we only tried to discipline them - which you have obviously not done.

I raised my son with a strong voice and had a belt there so he knew to listen and do what I asked him to do. I never had to use the belt or a butt smack since he was 8 or 9. He knows how to behave and respect others. My mom and dad did this with me and I am forever grateful they taught me respect and right from wrong. My son is now in University and works when he is out. Turned out to be a great child and young adult. The parents that are kid pleasers are only going to get troubles. IMO

Doe's the education department have the power to take kids off parents and send them to these camps?  If some were brutalised for simply arriving late for school then I find this very disturbing.

These juvenile delinquents sound like crybabies.  If they behaved appropriately they would not be in weekend  boot camp.  Take responsibility and quit blaming others.

For arriving late for school?

Yes, it breeds bad habits for when they start their careers in the adult entertainment industry. Bar owners levy stiff fines against tardy employees.

Spare the rod and spoil the child. This lot was old enough to receive electric shocks to the genitals. The soldiers were very restrained in their correction of these kids' behaviour.  Maybe the parents need the genital shocks.

Tend to agree, can't  make an omelet without cracking a few eggs. 'Mummy doesn't love me '.... reality sounds like a rare parents trying to set wayward kids straight for once!

Many of the victims were at the camp because of poor parenting in the 1st place.

The parents need to look in the mirror,  they are the reason their kid was sent there.

Irresponsible parents not enforcing or teaching their own kids right from wrong.

As usual,   the school principle is ducking and weaving and lying.   Thailand school headmasters and headteachers really are despicable cheats & liars.

I think these training camps do have a place in teaching unruly violent students .....   however,

The camp must re-evaluate their methods and soldiers actions as it clearly isn't working.  A more humane program needs to be implemented to ensure the kids understand what is good and what is bad,  what is right and what is wrong.

behaviour modification?

Just sums up the whole attitude of everyone involved - the very idea is suss right from the start - there needs to be a change of mindset not just with uneduv=cated soldiers but parents and schools too.
