Suspect arrested after reports of threats toward FEMA operations in North Carolina

Updated 4:00 PM EDT, Mon October 14, 2024

A North Carolina man was arrested over the weekend for allegedly threatening harm against FEMA employees responding to Hurricane Helene, according to the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office.

William Jacob Parsons, 44, was arrested and charged with Going Armed to the Terror of the Public, a misdemeanor, Capt. Jamie Keever said in a news release issued Monday.

“Parsons was armed with a handgun and a rifle,” Keever said.

Threat caused some FEMA offices to close
“We are aware of significant misinformation online and reports of threats to response workers on the ground and the safety of responders must be taken seriously,” said Jordan Monaghan, deputy communications director for North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper. “The Governor has directed the Department of Public Safety to identify with local law enforcement the specific threats and rumors and coordinate with FEMA and other partners to ensure safety and security as this recovery effort continues.”

I don't think the nut jobs targeting Trump pay any attention to Democrats.

But members of the cult of Trump sure pay attention to Trump's lies. Like you, for example.

How hurricane falsehoods are dividing the Republican Party

As Donald Trump and his allies spread false claims about Hurricanes Helene and Milton, the Republican Party has split into two camps: those who try to dispel the falsehoods, and those who are doubling down on them.

As the country digs out, Republicans in storm-battered states appear torn between the need to curb misinformation and fear of drawing a rebuke from Trump just weeks before the election. Many lawmakers and officials have sought to counter these rumors without directly criticizing the former president or their party.

North Carolina state Sen. Kevin Corbin was among the first GOP officials in the hard-hit region to speak out against the rampant misinformation, decrying the “conspiracy theory junk” in a Facebook post last week. (Republican) Mayor Glenn Jacobs of Knox County, Tenn., also urged his followers last week to “quit spreading those rumors as they are counterproductive to response efforts.”

There has been some inflammatory rhetoric from both sides during the campaign, though violent rhetoric from Democrats has been much less prevalent compared to their Republican counterparts. For example, there have been occasional comments targeting Trump, such as suggesting he is a danger to democracy, which could be perceived as incendiary. However, most Democratic leaders, including President Biden, have emphasized de-escalating political tensions and have spoken against the risk of political violence in general .

My apologies. I didn't realize you had friends.

It is odd how someone who claims to be from New York also has friends and family in NC and/or TN. Very conveniently placed family. And unlike the quoted sources, no way to fact check if they even exist.

Real friends.

Not Propbots or Internet strangers who give out emojis to each other when they call somebody scumbag or parrot some talking point.

Real friends. Folks that I sit down with and who are looney lefties but not hate ridden socialists. Folks that believe in freedom because governments are all a "bunch of C*n*s", which when you get down to it, is actually the truth, yes? So with my friends Ill listen to their lived experiences and they will listen to mine and we will have some cool screaming matches while ripping the bong. Toss a few curses and insults, I got "you've turned into a f****n Scouser" the other day. It is what it is, have a beer.

Because its in the heart bro. Because the people are real, well read and what we would call "Liberal" like my Daddy, a registered Democrat like me used to call himself. I grew up with books, not instagram, social media or the history channel. My friends are not folks who unaware of reality. My friends arent full of hate, like the terrorist loving america hating antisemitic Socialist/Leninist/National Socialists here who just spew insults.

The type of folks, like Martha Radditz, who minimize damage to Americans caused by Harris uncontrolled immigration.

So yeah bro, I have friends. I dont rely on this place for validation. Im only here a lot for the past few days because of intermittent s**ting which is something you try to avoid in Cambodia outside your own apartment.

Watch the hate fly hereafter.

Got family in Texas, Long Island, Northern California and Georgia (country) too. Why do you care where I live and where my family is? Stalker?

Thank you for sharing absolutely no independently confirmable data with us. And information about your possibly imaginary friends.

Still, it's kind of hard to believe that someone who typically spews stuff like this actually has any friends who aren't full of hate:

"My friends arent full of hate, like the terrorist loving america hating antisemitic Socialist/Leninist/National Socialists here who just spew insults."

Thanks for sharing with us an allegation that has been debunked many times over even in investigation done by Republicans in states where they control both the legislature and the governor ship.

No hate. I 've lived in Oklahoma (the only state where every county went for Trump 2020) and rural Florida counties that went 80% for Trump.

But thanks for the monologue, Gracie.

Good point:

1. Eliminate the fillibuster.

2. Amnesty and fast track to citizenship

Dont you always ask yourself why the Democrats OPPOSE Voter ID?

Dude why would I care to justify my existence to you LOL LOL🤣 Does the elephant acknowledge the flea?. There is nothing you can say about me or to me that means anything other than self gratification to you and fellow bits and bytes that are your "friends" here. This is the Internet, you are simply nothing to me other than some 14 year old in Mommy's basement who I can intellectually beat up to make sure that for posterity, stupidity does not go unanswered.

But thanks for letting me know that socialism is an insult.

If you're going to cite uncomfirmable facts of your existence as some kind of evidence, you should prepare to be challenged. And given that your hate filled comments don't exactly square with this this:

"My friends arent full of hate, like the terrorist loving america hating antisemitic Socialist/Leninist/National Socialists here who just spew insults."

And I know there is a rule in here about misleadingly cutting quotes to change their meaning. But you didn't the word socialism all by itself. You wrote "national socialism". Nazism.

And it certainly points to some kind of ego dysfunction that you proclaim yourself  the winner of an exchange.  And then there's the grandiosity:

"Does the elephant acknowledge the flea?"

I'm beginning to think that you are some kind of conceptual comedian who declares that he is free of hate while posting personal insults based on no informaton that I've offered. If so, thanks for the laughs.
