66 is not old  -  if you ride the bike properly.

I've got several good friends in their '70s, ride as good as me.    I've seen many young people, incompetent, who should not be riding any type of motorcycle.

We had a storm yesterday evening, lots of rain. It's night time, Z900, maybe a few beers, this is not the right time to go for a ride on a powerful bike.    I choose my time carefully t

Ride down was pre-dawn, no need to attempt to set land speed record.

Killed in A Motorcycle Accident

Supposedly joyful expat life.

Cut short all of sudden.

The only relief was, he didn't much suffer before his last moment.

Rest in peace Garrad...

Never under estimate idiots they can always find a way if they want to.

And once you realise  how  stupid the average person is,  just bear in mind that half the population is even more stupid than that

RIP. Inexperience and speed.

It has already been confirmed by people that knew him , that he was actually a very experienced rider

Z900 is a naked, not a crotchy.

Any 900cc bike is capable of incredible speed and performance, naked or fully faired

The pictures  are from the incident scene as reported in the post, or do you think I just made it up?

Right at the bottom of the picture, it looks like impact has ripped the top yoke away from the steering head. FFS, he must have been doing Stupid mph to do that!! The forks aren't at that angle to the frame because they're bent!

Maybe inexperience, i saw one yesterday on Pratumnak on a rental, hard to crash there

The way so many bikes fly downhill on Pratumnak-5, a congested area all times of day, I'm surprised there aren't more bad accidents there.  Stopping a speeding bike is hard enough, downhill makes it that much more dangerous.

And doing what he enjoyed. Almost fits, short and happy, but, strictly speaking, the ANF Life Coach Approved® ending is with a smile on one's face during a bonk. We've had verified instances of the bonk, Viagra nearby, but have always extrapolated the smile.

Drive like a fool, die like one. Sad but true.

Fortunately he didn’t kill anyone. Every single frik’n day I see so called farang “professional riders” or at least they think they are, driving frik’n stupid trying to look smart. I can care less if someone kills themself, just don’t take anyone else out in the process.

I live near the incident and I think your description of what happened is spot on.

That is an easy U-turn manoeuvre under the flyover and going left of the flyover leads to the new-style U-turn lane; This was an accident with the flyover.

I don't believe the first picture relates to the incident - those bikes are facing the wrong way on a carriageway and that is not a 900cc bike.

That flyover/U-turn approach is tricky on a motorbike.  If like me, I'm usually in the leftmost lane, letting faster traffic pass by on the right.  There are arguably 5 lanes of traffic. The U-turn configuration isn't readily apparent until you are close and realize that to continue straight travel, you have to cross 2 lanes to the right pretty quickly to enter the flyover. That's not easy with traffic flying by on the right.  I have often found myself taking the U-turn ramp just because I couldn't cross right safely in time.

Well none of them are actually rockets in reality so I guess  you are technically correct .

I didn't realise that there was an "official" definition of a slang phrase like "crotch rocket"    probably because there isn't one.    Its a 900cc motorcycle that is capable of very high speed and acceleration  and the main point of contact with the rider is the crotch.   That fulfills the definition of crotch rocket for all but the most pedantic on here.  There is nothing ignorant about describing it as such, in fact a motorcycle half the size would fit the description

RIP Mr Garrad  I live in the same village as the deceased.😪 🥲.

Riding bikes is a young man's game, you don't bounce so well as you age; still, 66 ain't a bad age to go, you're probably avoiding a lot of age related disorders.

Speak for yourself! Riding bikes for me is much like women, I'll continue as long as I can get my leg over them.

Yes, considering the extent of the damage and that no other vehicle seems to have been involved......perhaps 66 is getting too old for a crotch rocket.

Possibly the daftest comment here. I'm 66 and ride an H2, been riding for 50 years, I'd say experienced.

I've been a motorcyclist for 40 years, but the past 20+ in Thailand I stay away from big bikes.

No place for a big bike in Thailand. Too fast for the road conditions and adherance to the road rules by others. My last big bike was an FZR1000 in 1988. Would still do 160mph (257kph) even for an old bike then. I'm happy these days with my ADV150 at 118kph maximum. The freedom feeling on a bike is incredible, but sadly he found perpetual freedom. RIP the big biker.

No, it's not.   This is not a big bike country,  no need for them at all.  Far too dangerous.......

Mind you, it is the most dangerous place in the world (per capita).

Thailand is only 16th in the world rankings.

P.S. I mentioned that they were Swedes not as a snide dig at Swedes, but merely to point out that they drive on the RIGHT hand side of the road in Sweden.

So Sweden is unlike Thailand where they drive on either side of the road!  I recall a close call as a pedestrian crossing Beach Road Pattaya, which is (supposedly) one way only (heading south), as I focused solely on the oncoming southbound traffic and was almost hit by a bike heading north.

Agreed.  It is hard to ride a big bike truly safely in LOS.  That would certainly be the case for me (with over 50 years of riding experience) as it is so very hard to ride a big bike slowly and never give in to the temptation to ride more quickly. The issue is not the rider's lack of skill, but the complete lack of discipline of other road users.  Sooner or later something will happen totally unforeseen which, at 50 kph can most likely be avoided/survived, but at 200 kph is a shortcut to "RIP".

Nope, you just took that  title.

Worst types are those who need an incident to realize. About time you grew up and bought a car...

There was another photo of an Arai helmet nearby the scene

Couldn't have been much of a helmet if it came off in the crash.  Or did he have one but wasn't wearing it.

Just to clarify, he was wearing a helmet and it did not come off in the crash.

Injuries were below helmet level and it was removed by medical personnel as they attempted to save his life.

The deceased was, I believe, a local rider. Local riders know that flyover and if they are going to use it will have positioned themselves in one of the 2 right hand lanes. They also know that there is no problem in taking the 2 left hand lanes as they continue straight through towards Sattahip. This does look like an error of judgement in making a late manoeuvre towards the flyover. R. I. P. the deceased.
