Phuket Tourism Worries Mount Over Climate Change Impact

I notice it hasn't rained for almost a week now. So yes, the climate has changed.

One puzzling phenomenon of the climate change.

Draught and unusual level of downpour can happen at the same time in the adjoining areas.

Might look strange, but having one same cause.

It is the rising temperature.

Higher(than usual) temperature  sucks up more water from the ground(in one area).

And then it goes up in the sky to form more clouds; more rain(in another area).

That is How the Super Dry & Super Wet can take one after another.

On a broader scale, recent global weather incidents, such as Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton, which recently hit Florida, illustrate the wider climate impact.

I often wonder if the damage in america would be far less if they build the houses of brick, stone and metal and not drift wood from the local bayou ! If  I had the choice between brick house and trailer in a park in the area, I know which I would go for

I think the main reason of floods is that there is no " Town Plane " . I see more and more huge Condominiums and House Compounds builded in Cherngtalay but no drainage routes builded . I wonder where all the sewage is ending ? On top of the wilde building there is the climate change . Moonsons gets stronger and brings far more rain than before . Let's hope this high season will be sunny 🌞

I live on Phuket for nine years many years ago. It's always had floods and and landslides. More to do the blocking of klongs and building on hillsides Nothing to do with the BS climate change

Is that based on your knowledge or expertise or two elbows on a bar counter?

Really? It's climate change and not all the concrete? $$$$

Limiting development is easier than changing the weather.

Yes I was wondering if it wasn't climate but failure to put is adequate infrastructure to deal with all the run off.

I agree. The biggest problem is the criminals from the countries u mentioned. They know it but don't care.

How do criminals affect the climate anymore than honest people?

Until Thailand has politicians and businesspeople, as well as political and big business leaders, who care more about the future of Thailand and the Thai people than exploiting the "system" to stuff more money in their pockets and (overseas) bank accounts, then Thailand is doomed.

So its been doomed for centuries, yet it's still going strong.

Should worry more about russian “ putin sheep mafia” on short run….  Climate change will be gradual and adjustments can be made

I'm not sure there is a political force anywhere that cares for the people more than their political agendas and lining their pockets.  And yes, we are all doomed by the same fate.

JC and the boys -climate change is just a part of what?  "CLIMATE"  It has been going on since the beginning of time. Remember CC is just  code for wealth redistribution.

You mean like this?

Not necessarily. A tipping point, such as decreased albedo in Greenland, or a release of methane from clathrates, could trigger changes taking place in years, instead of decades.

We have already passed the point where changes were taking place over centuries.

Can't accept that seasonal flooding is "Climate Change".  August, September, and October are the three wettest month for centuries. Blaming Climate Change sounds like someone looking for something.  Phuket is rapidly becoming a Straits mega city, surpassing Penang and now second only to Singapore. It  will soon' if not already,be one urban metropolis.  Phuket needs to find a secondary reason to exist beyond tourism.

Exactly. The same people who fell for the Covid scam are now fully into the weather scam. You can't cure stupid.

So now due to mass clearing of hillsides etc for development everywhere they are blaming landslides and flooding on climate change !! 🙄🙈

Never seen a country like this where almost nobody will accept they are at fault when something goes wrong .

I almost dare not say it, but that arrogant Thai could learn a thing or two from that damned ‘falang’.

Thailand geographic location is what it is.

It has never exclusively attracted high quality tourists in first place. Already 25 years ago Khaosan Road was full of Western backpackers and travellers of dubious economic wealth. These tourists are still visiting Thailand. However, the combined effect of the emergence of low-cost airlines, the growing disposable income available to Russians, due the demise of Communism, Chinese, Indians (and Malaysians, Indonesians, Bangladeshi), their sheer number (over 3 billion just considering China and India) and proximity, has diluted the presence of Western travellers so much, that they are now almost invisible.

For your reference, the number of foreign visitors setting foot in Thailand grew from approximately 8.5 million in 1999 to over 38 million in 2019 (the chart below is from Wikipedia). Thailand expects to receive 80 million visitors in 2027, further amplifying this phenomenon.

Eighty million. Jesus wept. That doubles the country's population and more ...

The infrastructure can barely support its own population in low season.

It's an average of 6.7 million visitors per month or, by and large, 2.2 million visitors present in the country each day, assuming each one of them stays in Thailand for 10 days on average.

It's not an accurate estimate, because the number of tourists arriving varies seasonally, but this should give you a rough idea.

You may find some interesting statistical data here: EC_EI_028_S2 Tourism Indicators (bot.or.th)

When one sees all the sewage failures, spills and water contamination in America following Hurricane Milton, what to expect here in a poor and underdevelopped country like Thailand ?

How about investing some money on proper drainage, flood defences instead of just thinking about the dollars coming in.  Serious over building and destroying nature wont help .

The sewerage has been a problem as long as I can remember

It seems that many people believe in climate alramists.

There is lots of places in Phuket that are far above sea level, as are many of the roads.

If drainage is improved in the parts of Phuket that flood after a big storm, the whole situation

would improve. Global warming is affecting all of the world and not just Thailand.

CO2 is still less than one half of one percent of the atmosphere3, and methane is still a trace gas

so the climate alrmists can pound sand.

Out-of-date pie chart, the current CO2 concentration is 0.044%.

Well according to the private jet flying John Kerry, all of the commoner and peasant classes of citizens must be immediately forced to stop all flying, be forced to live in 15 minute cities, and forced to stop driving in order to "Save The Planet From Man-Made Climate Change.

And of course when that happens, if it is ever enforced by the world's governments (and it may in the future), then Phuket will return to being a fishing village as all tourism will be mandated by world leaders to permanently end for the plebeians .  Only the John Kerry's of the world will be allow to fly and take vacations.
Then Phuket won't have to worry about the occasional flooding (which by the way has been happening cyclically since the dawn of the Earth).  And actually it won't even be a fishing village as all fishing will be outlawed in order to "Save The Planet."  Only the John Kerry's and his WEF friends will be allowed to eat fish.

So trust me - it won't be cyclical annual floods that end the tourist destinations like Phuket (and in fact, all of Thailand's) and all tourism by the commoners.  It will be man-made laws outlawing tourism (for everyone but those with private jets who all are above all laws) in the name of stopping "man-made climate change"

Aviation accounts for only 2.5% of global CO2 emissions. Electricity is 40%, land transport 25%.

I doubt John Kerry's proposition would stand the pub test. Relax.

I wouldn't be to inclined to relax at all.   Never underestimate what idiots like politicians and the unelected but equally stupid  members of organisations like the WEF are capable of.  Its they who are  the biggest cause for concern  in my opinion, along with the likes of doom goblin Thunberg who motivate the sheeple to follow them as well as literally scaring the krap out of easily influenced naive kids
