It can be quite handy, to be registered in a yellow house book – including having a pink ID-card for aliens – for example for proof of address for banks, vehicle registration and driver's license.

I wish I could have just paid 5000 Baht.  I spent over that on witnesses and poo-yai-ban, anyway - and took all day twice + waiting 6 months to finally get the head-guy to sign-off on it.  They refused envelope-service (a witness asked).

Im in my 50ies so it is an advantage for me as well selling and bying vehicles. For hotels, I do not bother using it since my wife useally check in, and only 5 star hotels bother to ask for my passport, and passport only. Cant use my id card at 5 star hotels.

Yes, if you want to continue your Thai-SS-Health after your job ends - full coverage for 420 Baht/mo flat-rate.  Other reasons also, but for that one, is mission-critical.

Actually there's been some progress here in the last few years.Five star hotels and Bangkok and Hua Hin will ask for passport but will happily settle for PInk ID.

At the end of the day, it really isn't worth the hassle, I have had mine for a decade, never used them once, tried to board a domestic airline with the Pink ID car, no, you are not Thai I was told, Passport required for farang....LOL

 

Yellow Book is only good if you want to buy a car and have it in your name.

 

Maybe other can enlighten me as to any good uses they have.

Yellow book, never had to get a residence letter, when covid, all my jabs were free, oh and driver's licence..

Pink ID card, don't think I've ever used it, but at 20 or 40 bht, I added it to my arsenal, ya never know...

Yellow book was I think 20 bht at the time...🤗

 

Now, anyone who says a yellow book is useless, is a fool....☺️

Clearly your 10,000 baht was to circumnavigate the requirement of having your passport officially translated and endorsement by the Thai MFA, and to oil the wheels of other requirements.

I did my yellow house book and pink ID card at my local administration office in central Bangkok, and yes a certified translated copy of my passport was required.

The process took 2 visits a few signatures and 120 baht.

Many private hospitals work for SS, too. You will get a different (not necessarily worse) treatment from a privately insured patient.

Not true unless they have changed the rules. I still have my Thai SS and have had for the 6 years I have been retired the cost is 432 monthly and never had a yellow book or Pink ID card ever.

They may have changed the rules because I worked for 2 companys here in Thailand and the first one i worked for 8 years and retired and received the continued medical coverage as you say but ALSO my Thai Pension about 80K that they paid into my Thai Bank account in 10 days after i retired lump sum.

 

Decided to take a job offer a few months later and worked 7 more years and the same exact thing the Thai pension this time was a bit over 60K and paid out in a lump sum as well . I still have the full medical cover as well that will continue as long as i let them debit my account 432 baht. Which will be forever.

 

I will say a friend i sent to Sri Ratcha to apply for his after he retired was told you now have to be married or have a condo in your name to get these benefits. Told him to try another office and he went to Rayong and was in and out in 30 Mins all good. so YMMV.

Yellow book for your residential address exempts you from property tax  !!!!

Jab was a choice, I know guys here who got theirs for free, no Yellow Book or Residence Letters, they were in the same que as me, just produced their Passports.

 

Also getting a Thai drivers license is not free with a yellow book.

I didn't need to ask questions to get jabs waiving my yellow book in my area...🤫

Do you now make a personal Social Security Fund member contribution payment of 432Baht every month?

They changed the rules starting about a year or so back. Yellow TB and Pink ID card now needed to be able to opt into voluntary social security health scheme.

Thank you for that and I'm not surprised to be honest I wouldn't be surprised if they stop the medical coverage altogether for foreigners that were on the Social Security when they were working. I guess if they ever do that the ones like myself and others that pay into it privately would be grandfathered again good to know thanks for that post you'll save a lot of people the headache of trying to get this without having that yellow book and pink card

Mine is paid on 15 of each month by the SSF doing a direct debit into my  K bank savings  account, and I suspect  that what you're referring to.

 

I'm aware of one farang who pays over the counter at his local Krung Thai branch.

 

I have one buddy who I've told him about the SSF direct debit method but he refuses to believe this is possible.

 

Another point re 7/11, if there' not enough funds in your savings account on the 15th of the month you can go to 7/11 and quote your SSF member number and pay cash at 7/11.

Broad question I know, but how have you found the SSF health insurance. Have you had much need to use it?

Two visits only (I elected to use Rajavej private hospital (chiang Mai) as my nominated hospital.

 

1. A dental check (dental clinic, very well equipped is within the SSF area of the hospital)  which revealed the need for one big filling. One week later filling completed. Very satisfied with the work, the dentist spoke good English and he was a good listener, also his assistant (who was obviously being trained by the actual dentist. Dentist spoke nicely and in detail to the trainee assistant and kept asking 'any questions? No charge whatever because the inspection and work well under the annual limit.

 

2. Saw the SSF doctor (good English) re a urinary problem. Doctor asked some questions then said 'you need to see a urology specialist and he told the nurse to make the appointment. I asked if the appointment could be 4 months into the future, doctor agreed. The urology specialist is on the main staff of same hospital.

 

I asked nurse about charges, she responded: 'Probably no charge at all but we need to wait and see what treatments / medications the specialist recommends'. The charges can be difficult to estimate because the SSF doesn't generally provide for single occupancy private room. But there's other possibilities case by case. 

 

Perhaps other SSF members with more experience could please comment re room rate.

Correction: some five star hotels in Bangkok and Hua Hin that you may have stayed at have accepted you pink ID.

 

Unless of course you have stayed at every five star hotel in Bangkok and Hua Hin.

Last century, the amphur in Udon Thani accepted passport translations done by the only translation shop in town that's still accepted by the local police, hospitals and other government agencies in lieu of anything from MFA in Bangkok. That was for the YB and took a couple of visits and was inexpensive. The pink car was a DIY job early this century when they became available. Free.

It may depend on location, my last recent DL renewal in Ubon required a residence letter, previousl one they accepted copy of yellow book. They told me the rules had changed.

The jealous one's will rant that the Yellow book and pink ID are useless.

 

Not sure for the yellow book, but any kind of official ID is always useful as it avoids having to run around with one's passport.

 

Yes, yes okok the same one's will say no problem with photocopy of passport etc etc...but if you fall on one of the many highly "efficient, honest and devoted" chaps in brown uniform with golden wings all over who wants a special falang contribution, no doubt that the photocopy can be challenged in this country full of virtue and Police integrity !! 😇

 

But it is also a fact that many bank clerks love to harass falangs and often will refuse the Thai driving licence or similar document, other then the passport.   Happened to me in Hua Hin, Market Village branch of Kasikorn Bank on the 2nd fl. and also to few other foreigners who are my neighbours in the developpment.
