Late last night, a 4.7 magnitude earthquake in Myanmar's Shan State sent tremors through northern Thai provinces, including Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai, stirring concern among residents. The Thai Meteorological Department pinpointed the quake's epicentre 7 kilometres underground, approximately 42 kilometres northeast of Mae Sai district, Chiang Rai.

CCTV footage from Mae Sai captured the tremor's effects vividly, showing kitchen objects swaying. Despite the quake, local authorities reported no significant damage, nor harm to historic sites in Chiang Saen.

The residents, however, felt the tremors keenly. A startled business owner near the Mae Sai-Tachileik border expressed her anxiety over potential aftershocks, especially with recent flooding adding stress to the community.

Adding to the local disquiet, Chiang Mai has been battling unstable weather, with cold winds and rain lowering temperatures. The Northern Meteorological Center attributes these conditions to a cold air mass from China. Residents have been urged to prepare for this harsh weather, adding another layer of concern in the region on edge from natural forces.

Might there be an element of global warming in these increasing events? No one nation can prevent its effects.

I do not think that earthquakes are directly related to global warming .

4,7 is not the big one .

4,7 is the average reading when the Missus did not walk away with a winner from the latest lottery results 😉

"Yes, climate change is linked to an increased likelihood of earthquakes:

Rising sea levels

The rise in sea levels caused by climate change increases hydrostatic pressure underground, which can lead to changes in seismic cycles.

Storms

Extreme weather events like hurricanes can cause a release of energy in the Earth's crust, leading to earthquakes."
