A woman has testified to a House Ethics Committee panel that she witnessed former Congressman Matt Gaetz engaging in sexual activity with a minor during a Florida house party in 2017, according to her attorney, Joel Leppard. The explosive allegation, disclosed Friday, has reignited scrutiny around Gaetz, despite a prior Justice Department investigation that did not result in criminal charges.

“My client testified to the House Ethics Committee that she witnessed Rep. Gaetz having sex with a minor at a house party in Orlando in 2017,” Leppard told NBC News. The lawyer, representing two witnesses in the case, called for transparency and urged the committee to release its findings on allegations of sexual misconduct. “The American people deserve to know the truth about the person slated to become the top law enforcement officer in the country,” Leppard added, referencing Gaetz’s recent nomination by former President Donald Trump to lead the Department of Justice (DOJ).

A spokesperson for Gaetz dismissed the allegations, pointing to the Justice Department's decision not to pursue charges. “Merrick Garland’s DOJ cleared Matt Gaetz and didn’t charge him. Are you alleging Garland is part of a cover-up?” the spokesman stated, emphasizing that the previous investigation concluded without criminal findings.

The claims against Gaetz have resurfaced following a report by ABC News that a central figure in the DOJ's earlier sex trafficking investigation testified before the Ethics Committee, alleging that Gaetz had a sexual relationship with her when she was 17 years old. The woman, now in her 20s, was subpoenaed by the ethics panel over the summer and testified about the alleged encounter.

Despite the DOJ’s decision not to bring charges last year, the House Ethics Committee continued its own probe into Gaetz's conduct. However, Gaetz’s abrupt resignation from Congress on Wednesday—following his nomination by Trump to lead the DOJ—has complicated the investigation. By stepping down, the 42-year-old is no longer under the jurisdiction of the Ethics Committee, effectively halting the inquiry and preventing the release of its findings.

“These allegations are invented and would constitute false testimony to Congress,” Gaetz said in a statement responding to the accusations. “This false smear following a three-year criminal investigation should be viewed with great skepticism.”

The decision to end the probe without releasing its conclusions has drawn criticism, with several senators calling for the Ethics Committee’s report to be made public before deliberations on Gaetz’s confirmation to the cabinet post proceed. The controversy surrounding his nomination underscores the broader tension over the allegations and the lingering questions about Gaetz’s past conduct.

If there is ever a statute of limitations it should be on these type of claims . How can you defend yourself on this , even when proved right you will always be judged wrongly by many . The woman that make these false claims should face the same punishment and length of sentence that the man would get if guilty

I am a great defender of what you are proposing, however, I think you need two catogories on a finding - 1. Guilty of making false statements - sentence - what the man would have got if found guilty, and also 'unproven' , where there is a less sentence to none as the case is closed, man gets his honour back and the woman must be named in case she is doing this to other people. He then has a right to sue on bother cases

I've been of that opinion for decades. If it were there would be zero of them.

It's a fact that people "remember" things wrongly after a long time. I myself was accused of breaking a young woman's tooth when it was actually a friend of mine, and it was an accident, not any sort of attack.

I have always been amazed at the lack of discretion that Preachers and Politicians display when they are trying  grasp the next power level or ladder step in their career.   Prostitutes and  whores are experts at the game. However, when Preachers and Politicians attempt to play the game, they forget to cover their tracks and resort to lies.     I.E.   "I did not have sex with that woman".

It supposedly happened 7 years ago.

Was he accused and prosecuted at that time? If not, why not?

I don't really know that guy but my little knowledge about his is that I don't like him.

But what I like even less is that it seems now all the time guys get accused because they supposedly did something bad many years or decades ago. That seems to be the modern way of getting rid of some people.

IMHO if he did something bad, then he should be punished.

And if he didn't, then those accusers, who want money or fame or influence the world, should be punished.

Now it seems everybody can accuse any guy of sexual misconduct without any repercussion if this was just BS.

No need for that, just get her to make a deposition under oath, if she commits perjury she's in trouble.

But I doubt this would be the case here as we have rapists at the highest level of government now.

Here we go again with the made up political accusations.

So, she apparently was in the room while Gaetz and the "minor" were engaged in sexual activity, but did nothing to stop it- yeah right, we all believe her. Didn't someone say that we should all believe women ( except when they are of the opposite political persuasion ).

Why should not stopping it have any relevance? You appear to be leaning into this consensual misconception. The girl was a minor.

Are these the same witnesses that claimed Kelley’s remarks about Trump?

I see a pattern here of witnesses claiming this and that but no real evidence.

This is incredible. The cries to let him off the hook because an underage girl didn't file a complaint 7 years ago. Are you guys for real? I mean, seriously?

And the reason Biden had no charges against him for kiddy fiddling with his own daughter?

Could it of been the FBI refusing to bite the hand that feeds them.

In other news ...........

Well, do I think or believe Bill had any such relations with Epstein? Possible, o4 plausible, but, who out of importance did not?

I can claim Trump is in a honey trap, married to Melanie!? Which is plausible,

Whole America is full of sleeping agents from former Soviet union and of course Putins, on daily basis trying to trap people of importance.

Epstain could be one from either sides to manipulate and control politicians as well Diddy!

Where is the lists and evidences? Who knows, and who hides
