He may have been annoyed when they wouldn't let him board the flight , would be understandable if he had the overstay fine money

He was taking the piss with his overstay, serves him right.

Is there a seperate fine for "insulting officials"?

nope. It was pure "uniform rage" a.k.a. "look what I can also do!"

I imagine perhaps he didn't have the 20.000 to pay them plus his detention means missing flight so further expenses he probably doesn't have.

In saying that if he can stay over 6 months he either thought they will just deport him but I've no sympathy

I think that when your in immigration prison your fine defrays at a rate of 100 or 200 Baht per day, I think 200.

Riff-raff, hmmm, perhaps you should start looking over your shoulder then, and stop wearing flip-flops...:stoner:

It’s remarkable, isn’t it? Reading some of the comments and opinions shared here, one’s immediate impression often veers towards unrefined and uneducated rabble.....

....And, by "uneducated," I don’t mean lacking formal education, it’s far more telling than that. It’s the kind of ignorance born from traversing through life without ever realising that realities and experiences far beyond their own not only exist but transcend their narrow purview.

Such individuals habitually expose their own stunted growth through the sheer recklessness of their unhinged judgements, a reflection of their unrefined perspectives and intellectual stagnation.

Indeed, gets tiresome at times.........🤔

You seem to be suggesting that the Thais are too strict in their punishment, but could it be that other countries such as the U.K are too lenient.

Nope. I'm not. You seem wrong.

Really?

Technically you still have to pay for what you overstayed "outside of prison" and nothing during detention.

Interesting if they apply some "creative approach"

btw, the food in IDC is "uneatable" - either you order with quadruple price or enjoy long fasting. Even in BKK, I guess Phuket is even worse.

Poor sod, he probably said something very "british" like "PHOOK OFF, YOU BASTARD!"

Maybe my memory but I seem to remember (some months back) a number of news items about overstayers in Phuket being arrested on departure.

Yes, I remember that as well.

What's never clear to me is why exactly they are being arrested, as normal procedure for people who surrender at airport immigration with "just" an overstay is imposing a fine and a ban right there at the airport and letting them leave.

Maybe he refused to pay, or couldn't, as the article also mentions that he insulted officials.

Maybe he offered to pay the 20,000 baht fine but the Thais wanted extra and he said no f#£@ off so they wanted to take revenge, I’ve never been on overstay but I’ve dealt with immigration that wanted money for nothing . Perhaps some of the posters on here should stop opening their mouths and automatically bash the foreigners, the Thais don’t respect you for it

Why?

The if the Brit overstayed no one is to blame except himself.

Under the Good Guys In, Bad Guys Out policy, any arrest for overstaying carries an additional penalty: a re-entry ban of five years for overstays under a year or ten years for overstays exceeding a year

These are the lucky ones IMO. We should all ban ourselves...

He was on his way out. Just impose the maximum fine and ban and let him leave on his plane. No reason for the theatre.

I think that his apparent twattish behaviour and insults towards the Immigration officials probably was good enough reason to arrest him.

Indeed - the arrest photo with six officers for some dope who overstayed by 4+ months and was discovered only because he presented himself at the airport immigration counter seems like overkill...

...unless those six were the officials who were the subject of his hooliganism.

There is a separate fine for the offence of being a complete, gratuitous tw@t.

A British man was arrested on 27 November at Phuket International Airport for violating Section 81 of the Immigration Act (overstay). He had stayed in the country 130 days longer than permitted by the stamp in his passport.

The Immigration Bureau’s passport control unit at the international terminal reported the arrest. According to the report, the man was detained while undergoing departure control. It also mentioned that the 37-year-old British man insulted officials performing their duties.

After the arrest, he was taken to Sakhu Police Station to face formal charges under Section 81. While this section allows for imprisonment of up to two years, courts usually impose a fine of 500 baht per day (capped at 20,000 baht) and deportation. Until his deportation, the British man will be held at the Immigration Detention Centre (IDC).

Under the Good Guys In, Bad Guys Out policy, any arrest for overstaying carries an additional penalty: a re-entry ban of five years for overstays under a year or ten years for overstays exceeding a year, reported Novosti Phuketa.

He wasn't deported for insulting anyone. He was deported because he broke the law. End of .

Perhaps you should change who you hang around with, or who you attract?  You know that there are European stabbers, also, yes, and "almost ALL have bad teeth and smell terrible"?

Yes, he will still need to find the 20k for overstay PLUS he will likely be convicted of 'insulting public officials' resulting in a separate fine.

There was an identical case several years ago, also in Phuket. He ended up getting locked up for months awaiting his court case on the 'insulting public officials' charge. He then kicked off during the court case! I can't find the report now.

No. Besides, he can be imprisoned for up to 2 years. We seem to be ignoring the leniency here.

Yes, he had a number of sufficient reasons for needing drama. Arrogance, bigotry, superior legal knowledge, disagreement with the law, confidence in his fighting prowess."Stupidity" will summarize them.
