lol completely opposite experience for me

Agents have been superb never a single problem into 33rd year of coming and 3 times bent over backwards to assist me including just 2 weeks ago when China Southern completely cancelled flights using there 787 Dreamliners

Travel Trolley bent over backwards to inform assist and refund monies in days

People simply cannot grasp that agents like TT Trip.com Mytrip etc etc etc provide massive bookings and income for airlines and when those airlines are told we need this sorted for the client thats exactly what happens

Now you try that with booking direct. Both Eva and Etihad were complete basketcases and thats being poilte when I had minor issues to sort out

For clarity, how come in your 33 years of  "superb" and absolutely trouble free travel by booking through an agent, you encountered the direct booking EVA and Etihad "basketcases" you speak of?

Clueless utterly clueless lol

You go look yourself fella. Choose say Eva to London one way on Eva website on any day you fancy. Then use Skyscanner and I bet at least the first 6 agents (at the very least) will be cheaper

I did use an agent this time after vowing to never use them again after they  deceived me last time .

But this time I used Kiwi to flay from Thailand to London using Turkmenistan airlines stopping over in Ashgabat for a while   .

Went smoothly and no problems at all , didn't even have to show anyone the ticket , just went to check in and showed my passport

Pointless using agents, book direct is always better, unless you really need to save 20 quid

Totally agree. Unless saving £20 is so imperative. Often the change fees, cancellation, seat selection with a cheap agent is different from the terms when booking direct with the airline. I stopped using agents over 20 years ago. Now, use Google flights for routes, schedules and airline options, then book direct with the airline for best service. Other people may choose to do otherwise.

My experiences:

1) when the Icelandic Volcanic Ash cloud shut airspace in 2010, Thai Airways gave us priority for seats on one of the first flights back to the UK - easy via their call centre and no need to contact agent

2) Covid - when flight was cancelled - I received a refund within hours with one 5 minute phone call to the airline and a simple online submission to the card company.

Well, I saved 100 Quid , but the main reasons why I used an agent is because I could get a flight from Chiang Rai to London and the whole flights guaranteed , if booked through an airline then I would have to buy two individual tickets and if the flight to BKK is delayed and I miss the flight to London, then I would lose the flight .

   Also, I didn't really trust  Turkmenistan's website , the flight fare was quoted as being 961,00 $ . although I expect they mean 961 000 Manat (18 000 Baht).

East to use airlines if you only go from Bangkok to Heathrow back and forth

I guess I fail to understand what is easier or cheaper with an agent, while I always get the best prices on flights, paid as little as 30-40K baht for business to EU.

I explained above , sometimes you might need to use two different airlines to get to your destination and its more convenient to book one ticket with an agent , rather than booking two individual flights with two airlines

If you know which airline you'll be flying, I'd agree.

I use Orbitz because they offer tickets from a dozen airlines where I fly.  I've flown at least 8 different airlines this past 2 years on my monthly flights to Bangkok. I can't imagine price shopping them all for every flight.  And it's more than price shopping.  They all offer different times, routes and waypoints.  It could take hours to chase that all down one by one.  On some trips, each leg (4 of them) is on a different airline.  Though some of them are codeshares.

And then I push one button and they already have my personal info and my debit card on file.  Eezy peezy.

Surely anywhere except LHR, LGW and MAN, or any which Emirates fly to, will need an extra flight.

But if you are on the cheapest fare you have to pay for seat selection.

Not if you wait for online check-in. Then it is free.

True, but personally not comfortable taking that risk and getting stuck in the middle for a long haul flight.

I did not know that, but they will notify me about fares as they change. I am going to Scotland next May. I do not want to use KLM as they were a disaster last time and had dreadful food.

Looks like I wll be going with Emirates but I cannot see where you can book seats there.

On Emirates, choose your flights, enter passenger information and then choose your seats.   Thus, you can look at availability prior to payment committment.

Many airlines will book with a partner/codeshare to allow a single ticket purchase eg Qatar from Chiang Rai to London as per the pic.  Saves you going with the likes of Kiwi who you don't want to have to deal with if anything goes wrong.

Then you pay for the seats. You can however keep an eye on the seating and change it if you want to.

Wrong, then  you pay for the flights, seats are included in First and Business, not sure about P.E. and Economy.

And so they should be.

They are NOT included in Economy until online check in. But then you can change whichever they have designated to you.

When travelling alone, I can sit anywhere.

On Emirates last month I was upstairs on a 380 Economy, which was 2-4-2. Aisle seat was perfect.

I bet Emirates is so happy that you concur with their business practices.

What I meant was you are doing two journeys, one from Bangkok to Dubai and one from Dubai to the UK which means that you are paying for two seats where if you were flying direct from Bangkok to the UK you would pay about the same for one seat as two.
