Kata Beach .... they were selling tours. We went to a restaurant that had a Russian chef, and a russian waitress. Next day our haircut was by a Russian hairdresser.

How was this going on ?

Horrific

Bottom line is the government of Thailand wants them here as long as their trashed currency still has any value. What we as foreigners think is irrelevant.

Why so many Russians?
The usual reasons to escape harsh winters to the tropic and not so long a flight especially from Siberia and the Russian far east.

Since Putin's war of choice, yes a lot more draft dodgers, and whether they're just cowardly or are actually against the war is between them and their dog.

It's really none of our business.

Keep in mind there are very few countries that are desirable to travel to now that Russians can actually easily enter.

Thailand has decided to be one of those countries and I respect their decision and if I didn't, it wouldn't matter anyway.

I didn't move to Thailand for it to be exactly like my home country.

Thailand is still a a developing nation. Homes and rooms are not for investment or draft dodgers from abroad. For centuries Thailand has protected it's citizens from 'investment vultures', those who 'hide their money' and outsiders from destroying the stable eco system in their economy to protect locals.

The problems with these draft dodging Russians is they have effectively moved to Thailand long periods. They have raised rents , pricing out local thais.

They only ones who gain are property mogels, which is no surprise when you see what the previous leader was head off (clue - it involves property).

What's right with them?

Did you read my OP?

I did read your rant. Seems that you think Thailand should be for non Russian western people only. Their money is as good as yours and if the Thais don't like it then it's up to them to do something about it. However I doubt they care about some guy posting on AN, as they count their increased profits.

I have never been to Phuket and I haven't been to the Pattaya area in several years. I must admit I am not a stranger to Eastern Europeans. Overall? I quite like them. Especially the women. A lot of them of hot and I have had a couple of good experiences. Sadly at this point I would rather be around them than Westerners. First I have to filter out the non-White Westerners because there is just way too much nonsense from them, especially the American ones, then the White ones I have to filter out the men who are soyboys and the women who are feminists. Then there are South Asian, Sub Saharan and Chinese tourists.. Nah Russians are good with me.

...Well it looks like the AN members have spoken and the NO's firmly have it!!

66% in favor of not having Russians in Thailand.

Thanks to all that voted.

If the EU, the US and Canada had not put sanctions on Russia, maybe most of these « peskiest « Russians would have gone to France, Spain, Italy, Florida or Portugal and the millions would have been spent in Western Europe. Sanctions have side-effects you did not expect.

They are literally everywhere now. In every tourist hotspot, in every condo building, in every restaurant and on every train, Thailand is littered with these Russian draft dodgers who show a complete disregard for local laws and customs.

The kids are the worst, they have no respect for anything or anyone and the parents just laugh it off.

Just the other day I had a bust up with a Russian mother about how her son was behaving in public, I told her straight that she should be embarrassed and she should teach him how to do things correctly. All this was going on whilst a Japanese couple with kids were sitting on the opposite side of the train. Those children were so well behaved and it was such a refreshing sight, I even gave them a thumbs up and had a pleasant chat with them with my limited Japanese. I pointed this out to her to which she gave me the middle finger and told me to eff off...

Lovely people they are, but to be honest I have come to expect nothing less.

Well, it's not about "these Russians", just because you met some rotten apples.

In general they got a culture reaching back to a few centuries, which US can't offer.

So, we have riffraff here from many countries, but I admit there are wealthy Russians with less education/manners.

For Thais we are all farangs, no matter where we're coming from unfortunately.

Rude behavior, however could be seen by many. Thais also, or Chinese, Brits, Germans, Swedes, aso (long list)🧑‍🎄

Only Russian I met in Thailand was on Koh Chang in 2011 when the rotisserie chicken restaurants were packed nightly with Russian tourists.

He was drunk, gave me a bear hug, asked where I was from and then in a booming voice said "Russia....Canada.....hockey......great friends!!!"

Nice bloke. No problems with Russians.

But it is about "these Russians".

Most are not the 2 week millionaires who take over in numbers - Indians, Arabs and, of course, the Chinese. Other Europeans have less of an impact on the dynamics of a place.

The Russians for some reason (although I have absolutely no personal experiences to support this) seem to take control and many are here for the long-term. That is why they will create their own shops, schools etc. In some waays they are slightly intimidating in the same way that German tourists were in Europe in the 1970's.

They got too many passes and special treatment starting many years ago when Thailand gave them all sort of special visa treatment.  remember all the russian ladies on walking street handing out fliers for various gogos?  No work permits of course.  yet I often read of some western bar owners getting punished fined or deported for washing some glasses, sweeping a floor etc.  Similar thing now when you go to an Indian little hole in the wall. Many have Indian waiters.  If a brit runs a restaurant he has to hire like 5 Thai waitresses or waiters.

Never mind all the Russian tour guides that flooded Pattaya.  On the whole I would say the Russians are not very caring about other country customs.  They have lived under such repression that they don't have any clue maybe how to act.  I have seen some nice young couples with some children and I wish them well.  But there was so much russian mafia money in Pattaya it is hard not to generalize against the bad

I take great pleasure in flashing my little red PR book at a Russian (or a thai for that matter) whenever the topic of visas is brought up.

I've had so many Russians tell me they can stay here for 3 months at a time and I just roll my eyes and laugh.

Clueless draft dodgers who are totally out of their depth in LOS.

My issue is the Russians in Thailand is that they have driven up rental rates.  I was on Koh Phangan about 9 months ago, hoping to rent a property that I previously lived in.  Not a chance! Rented out to a Russian at 3 times my old rent rate! I stayed a week looking to rent a property for a modest rent.  Nope - all rented to Russians and the countryside being built over with Russian-owned projects.

Higher rents are hardly a negative for the proprietor. There’s frequent criticism that Thailand operates in a 'monopolistic' environment, yet the moment competition puts someone at a perceived disadvantage, the whining begins.

I'm all for competition.

I'm also all for Russian ghettos.

If they must stay here, then can't they all be lumped together in one big ghetto complex so they don't bother the rest of us law-abiding quiet folk?

Just a thought...

They have just as much right to be here as the rest of us.  But it is true that just as in any country, including mine, a sudden influx of large number of immigrants in a short time, can put a strain on housing, schools etc.

I only found out the other week, a Russian super market here in Phuket, I thought what a strange place to put it, as it was not in a Tourist area, my friend who owns another shop on the same block said it seems to do well,

The one year required service (with exemptions for health, going to college, etc.) is a totally separate thing from being in the war.

That one year under Russian law does not include going to war.

The actual fighters have been gathered other ways, there was mobilization before, others threatened, high paying contracts (basically bankrupting Russia the idiots), out of prisons, persuading people in trouble with the law or in debt to go to war instead.

Who told you that?

Morally they should be on the front-line fighting for their supreme leader instead of cluttering up the pristine beaches of this country.

Have you seen Lumpini condo in Jomtien.

There’s probably an internet forum in Russia similar to this one with something like the following post -

“Phuket and Jomtien? Both great spots in which to spend a Siberian winter. Phuket has nicer beaches, Jomtien’s cheaper. Only issue I have is with the hordes of sleazy looking pensioned off men from Western countries who infest both places.”

As a pensioned off Western man who’ll be back in Jomtien in a couple of days, I’m going to have to fire up Google Translate to refresh my Russian for “I’m sorry, I don’t speak Russian”.

Not just Russians, but any tourist.  I'm not even Thai, and I'm not a fan.  Covid was bliss time to be in Thailand.  Now back to 30M extra people in a country or 70M  ...  that's only good for people in the tourist business.

Praying for the next 'situation' to arrive, and it can't be soon enough :coffee1:

Lockdown and zero travel was a magical time here....loved every minute of it.

Yep, got to see parts of TH, like never before, and that's saying a lot, since being here from 2000.

The pristine beaches of Phuket, during high season with no tourist ... that was special.  The North, just as the rains stopped, before the burning, and vis was endless, could see every hillside ridge.

Hotel prices discounted to 'keep the lights on' rate.   We stayed at places, 5-6-700 baht w/brekkie, that cost 3-4-5000 baht now or more.  Petrol was even cheap, E85 was <18 baht :cheesy:
