Starting My Desktop.

Featured Replies

After having my desktop on hibernate for weeks, I decided to turn it off completely last night. This morning it took my ages to start, by continuing pressing the button, then a notice came up saying my One Drive was full. I do not use One Drive and no nothing about it, nor am I interested in it.

Anyone got any advice for me?

You could un-install One Drive, via Control Panel/Programs.

But I find One Drive so useful for backing up all my data, photos, etc etc. It's easy to upgrade your storage to what you need, or take out a 365 subscription for about 80 quid a year, which would give you, and 5 Family members (which can all be yourself) 1 TB of storage, plus 100 minutes of Skype, each, to almost anywhere in the World.  One Drive can be installed on your Laptop and Mobile phone, so you can access your Data from anywhere.

Other Cloud Storage systems are available eg Google Drive, but One Drive integrates with W11 best.

The only data I really use is movies and music, the music is on another phone and the movies are on my external hard drive.

I am mainly concerned at how long I took to start my desktop this morning after I turned it off completely last night after keeping it on hibernate for months.

OK, cannot help on the start up, sorry. Try booting without the external hard drive, or any USB devices plugged in.

Turn it off completely and then start to see if the problem repeats.  It might not. You could be all good.

See if it will start with one press of the button, not continuously pressing it.

Actually, disconnect from the mains, press the on/off in order to discharge the power supply, Then plug back in and hopefully the problem is solved.

Hibernate Mode:

  • Completely Off: Saves your session to the hard drive and completely powers down the PC.

This is possibly why you got the full disk message. Better to sleep or turn off.

Will do Thanks.

I'm not a Windows user for years now so my knowledge is out of date.

Could your system have been installing updates?  Several updates may have accumulated since it hasn't really been turned on for weeks.  I no longer remember how to check what updates have been recently installed.

Go to START, settings, Windows Update, Update History.

Yes, his PC was possibly/probably updating.

Once it's done, it's done, until next time.

You can set times for Updates to not occur and install

This morning the desktop would not come on again after being on sleep all night, yesterday it did not come on after being completely off.

I did as you said, pulled out the plug, put it back in switched it on, and it started right away.

What is the best thing for me to do, leave it on sleep all night or switch it off completely? Thanks again.

Try keeping it on PERMANENTLY, it takes very little power when idle. Sleep SHOULD work, as should powering it off. Keep trying. NOT HIBERNATE though. Take the plug out at night would be another thing to try.

Download and Install GLARY UTILITIES Free Version, that should clear any 5hit off your drives.

I never use hibernate, cannot see the benefit of it with today's PCs that boot in seconds.

Using hibernation exclusively for weeks at a time can cause performance and stability issues. It was never designed for that usage.

There is a Scheduling facility so you can tell it to clean up every day, week, month etc. I do mine twice a week.

All the best for the Festive Season and Hogmanay.

Try Aomei Backupper Free to back-up your Windows system onto an external USB drive. Better be safe than sorry. Easy to set up and restore.
