I head my head kicked in and face slashed with a broken beer bottle by a gang of punks after I parked in the wrong place in Pattaya.

But that was sometime back last century when the locals were all welcoming and friendly and there was no huge influx of dodgy or obnoxious farangs on easy visas, inciting the indolent locals into bloody violence.

So you parked in the wrong spot.

Did you apologize or tell them to F off?

If the latter, that may of explained the reason.

It likely would not take much.... I was thinking they were perhaps lounging on his car and he asked them to move on!

Whatever the problem was, if he was polite and accommodating with the situation instead of sneering, they probably wouldn't have beat him up to this extent.

As Jacko45k mentioned, my initial thought was that the Thai group might have been lounging on the Swiss man's car, prompting him to react. Perhaps he told them to "get off" with visible irritation, possibly even anger, and used language that escalated the situation. Of course, this is purely speculative.

Something clearly provoked the Thai thugs to damage the car and attack the man. It’s also likely that the Swiss man’s actions or words triggered their reaction in the first place.

Lounging on the car seems like a plausible scenario that could have sparked this confrontation.

That said, the story lacks details, leaving the void to be filled with speculation. But, since this is a discussion forum, it’s natural to hypothesise within the realm of reasonable assumption.

I believe the following points fall within those boundaries:

- The Thai group may have been lounging on the car.

- The Swiss man may have responded in strong manner.

I don't understand how these guys haven't figured out yet, that confrontation is best avoided in these situations. What did he expect was going to happen exactly ?

Maybe he expected that when asked politely to leave his car alone, they would move on?

see, I can make stuff up too, just like you did when you said he was “sneering”.

Fact is neither of us were there so don’t know. Another fact is that whatever verbals took place, a beat down is disproportionate and and illegal act.

Which "easy visa policy" has had any effect on Swiss travellers to Thailand?

Correct.  Myself and many others have never experienced a beat down by a Thai.

There must be a reason.

Have you experienced a beat down?

Nope - but I know others who have...   in both Thailand and elsewhere.

The common denominators in all situations is pure thuggery and weak law enforcement.

This was a group attack on one 66 year old man - in what world could this possibly be justified ?

Ah yes. Because rural youth in other countries will just say have a good day sir after someone yells and sneers at them.

Why do you associate with this uncivilized country ? Why do you have anything to do with it ?

I presume that you mean Thailand, when you refer to 'this uncivilized country". So then you wonder why I have something to do with Thailand.

If this is correct, well the answer is that I have traveled quite extensively, and I ended up visiting Thailand. As I used to study Buddhism, I thought this would be after all the best country for me, given that I thought then that since there is no snow here, and that I thought the food was good, and after meeting a girl that I started living with, that of all the places that I have visited, Thailand had a lot more to offer.

Then I realized that the food was a danger to the health, all the refined sugar, that I never knew was lacing all the food here, after using bad cheap oil to a temperature leading to oil toxicity.

And I thought ok, I will just start cooking al my food, as I never use refined sugar.

Then I realized that the Thais identify with Buddhism, but that in reality, there was nothing in the culture that came even close to the precepts of Buddhism as taught in the books that I read.

And then when I was riding my motorcycle with my GF, she regularly told me not to look at male rides, that it was too dangerous. She was right, two times that I looked at another Thai driver after a near miss of collision, they turned around and wanted to fight because of that.

So ok, I taught that Thailand still has a lot to offer, so i simply followed the advice of my GF. Better since then.

And then I realized that all their signs of politeness were actually fake. Just words of politeness, but actions of belligerence after a look that they do not like... And that people in uniforms used the most words of politeness, before and after trying to obtain corruption money. Some strange politeness.

And do not get me wrong, I did obtain a service in exchange for a brown enveloped. Found it great. Got justice in this service, no need to pay a lawyer and going to see a judge. Was cheaper, hehe.

So my apologies, I just wrote too much, trying to answer your question....

Ok, another lesson learned.

So, you have never seen Thais dishing out gratuitous violence and unprovoked attacks?

Obviously you haven't been here long or not lived in Bangkok or been to a concert in Isaarn, nor been attacked for going to the wrong school, which often happens in day to day Thailand.

Even coming from the wrong village can cause grief in rural areas, with no money and a bored resentful youth.

1.  No

2.  Been here long enough.  No.  I don’t attend school in Thailand.

3.  Life’s tough.

I’m not saying the beating was justified.  Just avoidable.

Can you confirm the Swiss man didn’t bring it on by running his mouth?

I have witnessed that plenty of times by farangs in Thailand in various situations.

A completely unprovoked attack.  Never witnessed by me

Swissy was given an attitude adjustment lesson in manners. Thai kids just go around bashing tourists for no reason.

Your incessant reliance on flawed sweeping generalisations, drawn from the actions of an insignificant minority, exposes a gaping void where critical thought ought to reside.

Were others to stoop to your level and generalise about AN posters based on your drivel, we’d all be branded as dim-witted cretins, a grim caricature of halfwits drowning mediocrity.

Worse still, your unfounded confidence in these crude conclusions serves only to underline the abyss of your ignorance, and highlights the depths of what you so glaringly fail to comprehend.

Very well said but, unfortunately, that also applies to many other, perhaps even the majority of AN posters, not just him.

No! However, I have had a gun pulled on me for daring to park on a public road that a guy had decided was his. I've had a taxi drive go into his boot to get a weapon but then decided better as I was standing waiting.  Just because you haven't experienced it doesn't mean you never will. So tuck yourself in bed with your blankie after bolting all your windows and doors and try and make sure no one becomes jealous of you......

Exactly why was the taxi driver reaching for a gun?  Doesn’t sound like you were even in the vehicle, just standing.

Your post has more holes in it than a brick of Swiss cheese.

Agreed - start with drink drivers.

Agreed, particularly the arrogant ones who profess to know what they're doing when intoxicated and then brag about it.

if you think that these boys were not provoked in anyway and just decided to beat up an old farang you are dumber than I thought.

If you assume that these boys were provoked in some way and didn't just decide to beat up an old foreigner, you are dumber than I thought.

The youths began smashing the car's windows with rocks. When Mr Kamai attempted to intervene

I think I see the reason for the ass whooping.

Why try to stop them?

Insurance will pay for vandalism.

How much is your life worth? 😀

I parked where I was legally allowed to park.

I had nothing to apologize for, but I did ask them to remove the barriers they had placed to prevent me leaving.

Then they assaulted me.

Pity you weren't around way back then to witness your first ever completely unprovoked attack.

Seems like the jury is still out on whether the Swiss guy bad mouthed the youths ( or even sneered ? ) and deserved the punishment or the youths were bored and decided to take out their aggression on an elderly falang for fun.

Either way the AN jury seem to be voting in favour of a lynching and deportation of his corpse for the falang.

You are generalizing too much without reason. Who is to say this Swiss man did anything wrong. More likely his story is true and those teens were acting out (which seems to happen more often in Pattaya these days) We all know if you saw your won car being destroyed that you would say something to get them to stop or would walk up and try to get into the car and flee. Any action would provoke them further to attack the man.

More than likely parked in a spot that someone else believed was theirs, may have been asked not to park there and just walked away to his dinner, mob waiting to teach him a lesson upon his return. Very common on Pattaya unfortunately!!

"Very common on Pattaya unfortunately!!"

As is unfounded speculation on this forum, unfortunately!
