More Wise issues
Maybe because this is a thread about Wise transfers -- and you jumped in with the SWIFT 8 digit system, or whatever. I thought this might be a nice time to point out that Wise, if you use, for example, USD vs Thai baht as your sending currency -- Wise will send it SWIFT. It's actually a good point worth noting, as you can inadvertently push the wrong send button, if you've set up a USD route to Thailand with Wise. I assumed, since this was a Wise thread, and you began talking about SWIFT transfers -- that you had inadvertently send through Wise, a SWIFT wire transfer. Not sure why you mentioned SWIFT in a Wise thread? But, don't really care. -

US Yemen strikes use up $200 million in 3 weeks. Success limited Pentagon tells Congress
I suspect that the military knew the strikes would be a failure before they launched ( even someone like me knew that ), but the idiot commander in chief has so lost his mind when it comes to the M E that he thinks in his tiny brain that a few bombs could actually succeed in destroying a dug in local force. Trump should stick to domestic policies as he obviously doesn't have a clue when it's not in the USA. He probably thinks the Houthies still live in tents and ride camels. -

Thai Rice Crisis: Losing US to Vietnam Looms Over Thailand
Thailnd's Hom Mali Rice Faces US Tariff Challenge Amidst Competitive Pressures Photo courtesy of Vecteezy Thailand's renowned Hom Mali fragrant rice is facing a significant challenge in the US market due to newly imposed reciprocal tariffs. The US has implemented a steep 36% tariff on Thai rice, increasing costs from approximately US$1,000 to US$1,400 per tonne, threatening its competitive edge against Vietnamese rice. The Thai Rice Exporters Association expressed concerns that these tariffs could shift US importers' preferences towards Vietnamese rice, which, despite a higher 46% tariff, remains more affordable at US$600 to US$700 per tonne. This shift could weaken Thailand’s presence in the US market, where last year it exported 850,000 tonnes compared to Vietnam’s 40,000 tonnes. Chukiat Opaswongse, President of Hom Mali, noted that US buyers have secured roughly 100,000 tonnes of Thai rice before the tariffs take full effect. However, he warned that the price gap would likely drive importers towards cheaper alternatives. He urged Thai authorities to support exporters by negotiating with the US to mitigate the effects of the tariffs. This tariff issue isn't limited to rice. People’s Party Deputy Leader Sirikanya Tansakul emphasized that the US tariffs are part of a broader strategy to reduce its trade deficit and encourage domestic production. She warned that if left unaddressed, these tariffs could shrink Thailand’s GDP growth by over 1% but suggested this impact could be lessened with successful tariff negotiations. Besides rice, other Thai exports like communications equipment, car tyres, and electrical appliances are also affected, potentially slowing foreign investment in the Thai market until stability returns. Sirikanya advised focusing on the service sector, where the US maintains a trade surplus with Thailand, to help cushion economic impacts. As negotiations continue, the stakes for Thailand’s rice exporters—and its economy—remain high, with the need for strategic diplomatic efforts to stabilize the situation and preserve market share in the US, reported The Thaiger. -- 2025-04-04 -

DOH Raises Alarm Over Increasing Tobacco and Vape Use in the Philippines
File photo for reference only On April 4, the Department of Health (DOH) sounded an alert regarding the rising tobacco and vape use among Filipino adults, highlighting it as a significant public health concern. The 2023 National Nutrition Survey shows that usage among adults aged 20 to 59 has escalated from 19% in 2021 to 24.4%. The health department described the uptrend as alarming due to the extensive health risks associated with tobacco and vape products. The DOH underscored that tobacco use is a key risk factor for severe conditions like cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. It pointed out that heart attacks, cancer, and strokes, which were the leading causes of death in the Philippines in the past two years, are heavily linked to tobacco use. Beyond these, smoking is also associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, and several reproductive health issues. The DOH further warns that tobacco can lead to eye disorders and immune system problems, such as rheumatoid arthritis. Equally concerning is the rise in vaping, with the DOH stressing that these products are not safe alternatives and pose substantial health risks. Issues such as e-cigarette or vapor product associated lung injury (EVALI), nicotine addiction, along with respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, are some of the dangers stated. In response, the DOH is urging the public to quit smoking and vaping, promoting its cessation services and quitline (1558) as resources for those seeking to overcome addiction. The department remains firm in its stance against any collaborations with the tobacco industry, continuing a policy of refusing donations or partnerships from these businesses. This stance follows an incident involving DOH Secretary Ted Herbosa, who faced criticism after being photographed with tobacco company executives, sparking backlash from health advocates and anti-tobacco groups. The department's commitment is clear: protect public health and work towards reducing nicotine addiction across the nation, reported Manila Bulletin. -- 2025-04-04 -
