In an effort to enhance public safety along Bangla Road in Phuket, local police have started compiling profiles of transgender individuals working in the bustling nightlife district. This initiative aims to reduce tourist altercations and encourage locals to become informants for crime prevention.

The Head of Patong Police Station, Chalermchai Hernsawat, articulated that this strategy, initiated a few days ago and conducted again on December 19, targets improved peace and order without discriminating against the transgender community. Instead, it prioritises ensuring a seamless experience for both tourists and locals in this popular area known for its vibrant entertainment and international visitors.

Authorities are optimistic that by maintaining detailed records, they can promptly address potential conflicts, thereby preserving Phuket's reputation as a safe and welcoming tourist destination. Given that tourism is crucial to the island’s economy, maintaining visitor well-being is of utmost importance to both local businesses and law enforcement.

The move has prompted discussions about privacy concerns, with officials reassuring that all efforts are being made to respect individual rights while focusing on maintaining public order. Police will continue to assess the initiative's impact, adjusting as necessary to address community feedback and fulfil safety aims.
