I don't think you could live on THB 20K a month, or at least you couldn't live very well. I live in a rural area up in the mountains, and some of my neighbors who live in bamboo huts probably live on that or less, but it's not what I would call a very pleasant lifestyle.

Going by what I have read on this thread. Possibly the HQ of the Pattaya Balcony Skydiving Club.

No, it's mainly occupied by young Thai Gogo bar girls.

Average rental is around 2000 baht per month.

Because it's mostly occupied by Thai's, not like Nirun, mostly foreigners, you don't get many foreigners falling from height.

Sadly, Nirun is very different, if walking through common areas, always look up.

It all depends on LOCATION.  Have lived in Pattaya ( 2 years ), BKK (3 years ) and KORAT 5 years.

MY look at BASIC MONTHLY it in detail, LAST MONTH

2 Mobile phone's 440

Internet / cable TV 445

Water 147

Electricity 1650 ( fan day AC night )

Food 8000+

Transport 260 round trip 1 time a month to bank.

Mortgage ( Her condo in BKK) 2200

Rent ( 2BR "now" furnished in Korat ) 4500

( Furniture / stuff taken from  BKK condo and new 16,000 on move to Korat.

Electric tricycle 10,000 ( saves 3000+ monthly for transport )

Locally: 4 MAJOR stores, FARMERS market, free fishing lake, many mom & pop stores. & 7-11,  Immigration ... 15 or less minutes from my location via tricycle - now, 10 new strip mall stores opening.

.....If I take away 2BR house COSTS, Remove tricycle COST, and MOVE back to condo outside BKK, under 20,000

WHY NOT:  No money down on a LARGER condo purchase and NEW LARGER mortgage - I'M 80 Years old, QUIET neighborhood in Korat and services are close.

I could do if I was in my 50's and single, depending again on LOCATION where living, and have monies left over.

BUT

I DO bank monies for FUTURE medical services - INSURANCE is impossible.

Oh, no pool, I have to swim in a natural lake - thus save 20,000 a month for pool cleaning.   😁

Side note:

Today wife went to farmers market, bought 10+ days ( 2 daily side dishes  ) of veggies for 460bt. 😀

will buy a small room in the Flybird Condo in Pattaya

First off, don't buy a condo in Thailand.  Makes it a lot easier to move once some noisy neighbors move in near you.

You would be better off investing the money you would spend on buying a condo in your home country where you get a fairly good return.  Then use that money to pay your rent or at least cover a significant portion of the rent.  Maybe then you will have more than 20K baht a month to live on.

My reply

I am not 80 but 77 so I will have the same problem with health insurance but my story is a bit different. I don't need to pay rent since I have my own place (in my wife's name) I have been married over 20 years to a Thai my cost may vary to yours. I have my own kitchen cook my own food but most will be Farang food. Saying that I only eat fruit in the morning no lunch and just a small dinner. I don't need a phone but I have Wi-Fi in my place. Don't have a car but need to pay for petrol sometimes.

Can you live on 20,000 baht per month if you own your own home /condo

Indeed, but there is a question mark over for how long.

I have my own home and only fixed outlay is electricity and internet, 2000 and 750/month. Everything else is conditionally optional. main expenses are food, transport and health.

Food and drink can be from around 6000/month upwards, transport can be zero if you remain within walking distance and the same for health if never in need of medication or treatment.

Obviously on the surface you could stay within budget but reality will make it unlikely over time.

You would stand a much better chance staying closer to the Pattaya taxi area, motorbikes may be cheap  transport but often result in high medical bills.

At the end of the day,  all about how you want to  live.

You can live on it, but essentially its not living and its a ticking bomb on health care as its red-flagging you as someone who will not pay medical insurance.

Medical insurance, apart from the odd company, these insurance companies will cut you off when you get old even though they have taken your money for years and had no claims, or raise their rates substancially, so don't blame people who do not have medical insurance.

Yes ! And many think renting a place outside the "city" areas are cheaper but you need to factor time and costs in transport to go shopping etc.

I prefer to be close walking to everything, unfortunately Jomtien in Pattaya has only one expensive supermarket

What's the difference then you living in Thailand and Australia?

Your still living  under 20,000 baht a month in Australia!

Ok free medical in Australia I guess if your using a bulk billing doctor

But I can't see any difference money wise if your in Thailand?

Just find a cheap place in a small village and walk to the local kad. Adapt to the simplest conditions and then you won’t need 20k฿ a month.

There is a fine line between existing and living. Do not need much for a good living, but there is some basic needs that is necessary to feel you are both happy and secured. For most expats, that means access to foreign food and products.

Pattaya is the cheapest expat city for foreigners who basically have everything you need.

If poor and single, Pattaya is the poor man place to go.

Blend in mix with the local folks, participate in the local events, learn the language and hangout at your neighbors drinking stall and chat it up until you’re ready to pass out.

Trying to live a Western lifestyle on 20k฿ a month seems pretty miserable in th. Go to Cambodia, you’d probably be better off.

Absolutely!   Yes, you can rent a place in the middle of nowhere cheaply but then what?   How do you take care of everyday, normal necessities?  Dental and health check-ups, getting a haircut, Immigration, grocery shopping, banking, etc.   Likely, it's going to mean getting in the car and driving a distance to do these things.   And, what do you do with yourself all day, stuck out there?

If you're on a budget, I think you'd be better off somewhere like Pattaya, where there is a large variety of housing available at all price points, whether renting or buying.  If you locate near a baht bus line, you can cheaply handle some of your transportation needs.

Although cooking for yourself can save money, sometimes you need a break and the mall food courts, such as the one at T21, offer inexpensive meals, in a lively atmosphere.  While you're at the mall you can get some exercise mall walking in the air-conditioning--sort of the reverse of the mall walkers in America who get exercise in the winter by walking the heated malls.

Pattaya also offers free entertainment from time to time--from music and other festivals to fireworks and sports events.  Even on a 20,000 baht budget, there's likely room to see a movie now and then--and Pattaya has several movie theaters in English.   With a large expat community, there's also the opportunity to make some new friends to socialize with.

I'm going to do my teeth done now, and it delayed my christmas holiday plans, just because I had neglected them to long.

I will also make new and replace 4 implants at a total cost of 200k all together with travelling back and forth and hotel.

Living on 20k a month, in a rural village is not a problem, if house, car, motorcycle is all paid for, but things happens, and that's when you need a big chunk of savings.
