Merit? Largest organization he ran had perhaps 50 employees... US military has around 3 million. And Pete ran the budget into the ground for both organizations he oversaw.

Secretary of Defense can't be a drunk. Reports from his employees say he was often drunk on the job. Lame Republicans try to say "many senators have been drunk at work too"... but they aren't part of nuke chain of command among other things. Somehow saying "we're as awful as he is" is faint praise.

So tell me, just what are his merits other than being a Fox weekend post and Trump ass kisser?

The remedy for foes is to wake them up, not try to deter them with violence. Doing that just prolongs and maybe even escalates the conflict.

Defense secretary is way too Important a role for such a Fox News talking head bozo. Maybe Ambassador to Slovénia. At least Trump picked someone credible for Secretary of State with Rubio. Most of his picks are more fit for dark satire than a presidential administration.

I think the administrator of a statewide Boy Scout organization might be about the extent of his skill set. 

 

Trump has an absolutely terrible habit of picking from the bottom of the barrel, and selecting people that are spectacularly devoid of talent and appropriate experience for the important positions he appoints them for. And it is entirely partisan and it is entirely based on fealty to his fragile ego. This of course is one of the reasons why his last Administration was such a failure.
