Perhaps, but then the ex soldiers are amongst their peers, not in a public place  like a bar in Pattaya. Their former work is (presumably) considered more "matter of fact" than revelling in former glories.

Never been in the SAS, but did get arrested by the Libyan secret police once. But i didn't know it at the time, or i would have shat myself. Only questioned for about an hour, guess my answers checked out, because I am still around.

Last week I was talking with a buddy who has lived in Pattaya for a while, and we were discussing how many people profess to be or have been in the SAS who are living in or visiting Thailand.
I have heard people talk about being in the SAS myself not so much these days with less bar visits than I used to.
I am actually quite surprised there is anyone left in Hereford as they all seem to have migrated to Thailand.
This is by no means any disrespect to retired or serving military who I respect a lot, just wondered if anyone else has seen or heard the same on their Thai travels?

Bumped into a few here in my single bar-mongering days, even had one in the village where I used to live. Even when you tell them you're ex army yourself, they continue with their fallacy. They must genuinely have convinced themselves that it's true.

Oddly enough, I was on a contract in Libya in 1989 (oil related, nothing military) and 3 of us got called into the boss to be told we were being "let go" immediately. Within 2 hours we were flown back to Tripoli, paid off and given our air tickets to London, via Malta.

 

Back in UK, I tried to find out WHY and the contracting company said they wanted to know too but no one in the oil company would say anything other than "our faces didn't fit".

Given the politics of the day and the fact that the contracting company treated us fairly (all paid up and transported home), I took the view, in hindsight, that I may have had a lucky escape from something or other. I'd still love to know, but I guess I never shall  🤔

I met a guy in Patpong that kept alluding to being a spook, although he claimed he was English. Throughout the years I bumped into him now and again in bars until he started drinking regularly down Soi 22. 

 

He was arrested for having a chopped up body in his freezer and shot a policeman when they raided his business in Thong Lor.

 

Turns out he was on the run from the FBI for 40 years and was running a passport forgery business as well as other criminal activities!

Just read that article amazing.

It's sometimes difficult to tell who is being a Walter Mitty, trying to re-invent themselves, on the run or just an outright BS'r, this guy definitely had something to hide not sure eluding to be a spook would take the attention away from him that he wanted, 40 years on the run though it's a beauty, bet he's kicking himself for chopping someone up and keeping them in the freezer 🙂
