Russian Tourist Killed, Two Injured in Pattaya Big Bike Crash

A collision on Jomtien Second Road in Pattaya has left one Russian tourist dead and two others seriously injured after a high-speed motorcycle collision late night.

 

The crash occurred at approximately 23:30 on 29 January in front of the Atlantis Condo Resort, when a foreign motorcyclist, riding a KTM big bike, struck a Russian couple crossing the road hand-in-hand. The force of the impact sent both pedestrians flying, leaving one dead and the other critically injured.

 

Emergency responders from Sawang Boriboon Rescue Foundation arrived at the scene to find the motorcycle damaged and three people injured:

 

Artem Avdeev, 26, the rider of the big bike, suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital. His nationality has not yet been confirmed.

 

Zhanna Dzurova, 44, a Russian tourist, sustained severe leg injuries and was rushed to hospital for treatment.

 

Her husband, whose identity has yet to be confirmed, was critically injured. Despite CPR efforts by paramedics, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after the collision at the scene.

 

 
 

A witness, 34-year-old Arkhadej, stated that he had stopped his vehicle to allow the couple to cross the road when the speeding motorcycle approached from behind and struck them.

 

“I saw the couple crossing, so I stopped. Suddenly, I heard the sound of the bike coming at high speed, and in an instant, it hit them. The impact sent them flying in different directions,”  he told police.

 

Police from Pattaya City’s Dongtan substation are now reviewing CCTV footage and gathering evidence to determine whether excessive speed or other factors contributed to the crash. The motorcycle has been impounded as part of the investigation.

It's the ONLY time CCTV is consulted: AFTER an event.  There are a myriad traffic offences committed here every HOUR but an absentee police force condones these offences.  Speed kills and SHOULD be the easiest to eradicate IF there was an active force.

My condo overlooks Jomtien 2nd Rd.  The Rimhad Condominium crosswalk on 2nd Rd. has a stoplight but both motorcycles and cars routinely just blow through the red light.    Big Bikes use Jomtien Beach Rd as their own Bira Circuit all day and all night.  Even on these nice cool nights, I have to tightly close my 10th floor balcony doors to lessen the sound of screaming motorcycles racing up 2nd Rd, then making a U-Turn and racing back down.  I have gotten so I can recognize certain bike hat are regular offenders and predict where they will U-turn and come back.  No police enforcement whatsoever.   

I wish it had been the biker that lost his life rather than the pedestrian.

Jomtien Second Road is a racetrack for these Russian ( most ARE Russian) Big Bike Renters..Penniless Russians? Nope..1000+Baht/Day. They have been racing up and down that road for months now.. long straitaways... I hear them every night! Sad for the couple...

They should take them away...at least people would then be able to decide if it's safe to cross

maybe it's just my impression, but I don't see the police doing roadblocks anymore, day or night.

 second road and thepprasit have become a racetrack for big bikes without mufflers. the government is selling off Thailand and its people to the highest bidder

When this happens when I want to cross the road, and it isn't at a pedestrian traffic light which is green, I always sign the driver to move on, and wait until the road is clear to cross the road.

I realize this is a dangerous situation, because you can't see the traffic that is coming from behind, and the traffic from behind doesn't see what is happening in front of the car.

That said, even crossing at green pedestrian lights is gambling with your life in Thailand, as I rarely see people stop for the red light.

And that includes tour buses, trucks and police cars

There lies the REAL problem, they fail at their jobs, and they also fail at setting an example for others. The RTP hat needs to be disbanded, and replaced.

I agree with you. I prefer NOT to use pedestrian crossings at all. They can so easily give one a false sense of security.

 

The closest I came to being hit on one was when I was crossing a dual carriageway. I'd made it across the first half ok, but then I was almost struck by a motorcycle going in the wrong direction! I was, of course carefully watching for traffic coming from my left!

 

In Thailand, always expect the unexpected.

If I were one of the victims, and still able to get up, I would have walked over and placed my foot on his neck until he stopped breathing.

Last weekend, walking in Lumphini Park where there are no cars, no scooters and not even any bicycles at that hour, I found myself stopping every time I crossed the road and looking both ways before setting foot on the asphalt.  It's a conditioned response from years of living in Asia.  I can see where a tourist just visiting wouldn't have that kind of rational fear.

The police have been doing occasional checkpoints along Jomtien 2nd Rd on the Northbound side near Rimhad Condo, usually from around midnight until 0200, late in the week.  Maybe 2 or 3 times a month.  I always know when a checkpoint is in place because of the unusual quiet...no screaming bikes.  

Unfortunately, they only check for alcohol abuse and documents, no noise checks.   Once the plod are gone, the racing resumes.

Anyone with any amount of motorcycle training/experience, or commonsense, would ever fly by a vehicle stopped at a Zebra crossing (or the middle of the road), thus blocking their view of what lies ahead. You drive for what you can see, and you need to be able to stop for what you can't, anything obstructing your view of the road is a hazard, SLOW DOWN!!

Easy and cheap to put a stop to irresponsible speeding but the outcry from motorists would prevent it. 

 

Put these in pairs 100 meters apart all along the beach road and speeding would be difficult and lives saved.

Amazing @dddave because although I live in Patong, I could have written exactly what you have written about Pattaya, the big bikes screaming up and down the road outside of my condo and the inability/laziness of the police to do anything about it.

 

I do go out on my Honda Click, but only short distances and even then I am very wary of what is around me, and many is the time when I have stopped at a pedestrian crossing to let people cross, only to find other motorbikes zipping past and not giving a hoot about those on the crossing itself. So now I look in my mirrors and if there is anything close to me I drive on, slowly but surely.

 

It is an idiot's paradise with poor policing here in Thailand, and it's been like that for ages, however I will add that it seems to have gotten worse over the recent past, sad to say.

100% agree... 

 

We get a ticket for doing 102 kmh on the expressway in Bangkok (100 kmh limit)...  yet nothing is don't about the delivery pickups gunning recklessly through traffic on Sukhumvit road and elsewhere....   and then we have the loons on bikes speeding like this... 

 

Just recently another person was hit at the same crossing the ophthalmologist was killed... 

 

All the police do is fine those who have accidents, there is no active enforcement, just a reactive penalty... its exceptionally lazy policing.

Watch out if you travel on this road or try to cross the road as a pedestrian.

What I've noticed is people buy large SUV's and just fly over them without slowing down. Motorcycles fly through the curb and the edge of speedbump so they don't have to slow down either. I assume these people are just mentally ill.
