If you are retired, does it bother you that you will never be a Thai Permanent Resident?

Featured Replies

does it bother you that you have to perpetually go to immigration year in year out, photos, cap in hand, 800K bank balance etc just to stay here? it must be so cumbersome, especially when you are over 60 or so..

as far as Im aware, retirees are ineligible to apply for PR because they don't meet the income requirements so must always stay in the lowly Non Immigrant status for the remainder of their stay.

I am very close to having my PR in the bag. Just a few more hoops to jump through and I'm done.

It's really great to be alive at the moment 🙂

Elvis from Tupelo.

Maybe he'll be wearing a suitably large placard around his neck announcing that he is noble and special because he has PR and will demand appropriate recognition?

You want to be a Permanent Resident of Thailand as a retiree?

I have heard that it was almost impossible for old non-working foreigners, after some time; even though it used to be possible(until earlier 21st century).

Since then, the hurdle has been quite high to get one.

Must have: Work Permit, and minimum monthly labor income THB100000-(or more) on regular basis.

In other words, need to demonstrate your active contribution to Thai economy.

That's all what I have heard about(from a couple of reliable sources, including immigration law office) by now.

I have never become interested in getting one.

One Year Renewable Retirement O is just enough to me...

I consider it a compromise offered by the Government.

You can stay here on a rolling temporary basis with a relatively low bar, very low bar once you factor in agents circumventing the financial requirements.

or

You can gain permanent residence and/or citizenship (depending on your family circumstances) but the bar is high and you are going to have to make a real effort to attain that.

I am sure lots of others are going to say this but it would have been better if my country, the UK, had adopted this stance.

In answer to the OP's question, I would have applied for Permanent Residence at the earliest possible juncture when I had a work permit with the benefit of hindsight.

Impossible for MALE non-working (in Thailand) foreigners.

For any FEMALE foreigners married to a Thai man, really easy working or not.

Sorry Charlie, but I disagree.

I would rather live here knowing that I have full legal rights to remain here on a permanent basis regardless of my financial status, and never having to do another 90 day report again is definitely an added bonus. As is having the option to become a naturalized Thai citizen after 5 years if I so choose.

I am not Bob and I love Thailand and Thai people. I also love the language, weather and the food.

What on earth are you on about?

I am Elvis from Tupelo.

I prefer to leave my options open. I may wake up one day and decide I want/need to move to another country. There are many that I like. I don't want to be permanently tied to one.

You can move to another country and still keep your Thai PR...

It is called the LTR visa.

Absolutely, I got it just before I turned 70 and thought: 70 + 10 that's so that's as permanent as it can get. And it all took just one pleasant trip to Chamchuri square.

There is also the little tax advantage, every year that goes by I save over 800k.

But to be honest, I don't speak Thai and have never worked here, so no way I could have made that mistake.

are you another one that can't get PR?

to the title ... No, as don't see an advantage, or disadvantage about being a permanent resident, or not.

Much harder for them to kick you out if your are a PR.

No need to renew visas or do 90 day reports.
