Pattaya Responds to Criticism Over Viral Video of Indian Tourists Sleeping on Beach

A recent video showing large groups of Indian tourists lounging on Pattaya Beach has sparked intense debate online. The clip, shared on Instagram with the caption "Indian Tourists in Pattaya," features around 100 visitors sprawled on mats, some of whom are seen drinking beer amid piles of litter.

 

The footage has been met with criticism from both local and international netizens, questioning why these tourists have chosen the beach over hotels. Concerns are being raised over the unseemly behaviour potentially tarnishing Pattaya’s reputation.

 

Pattaya’s mayor, Poramet Ngampichet, addressed the situation by noting the surge in Indian tourists to the area, particularly during the high season. The recent beach expansions have made the area a round-the-clock relaxation spot, but it remains a public space, hence the city cannot impose opening or closing hours.

"Pattaya Beach will continue to be monitored by our municipal officers and tourist police around the clock. Although we cannot prevent tourists from sleeping on the beach if they aren't causing harm or breaking laws, any rowdiness, loud noise, or disruptive alcohol consumption will be dealt with immediately under existing laws," the mayor stated.

Regarding the littering issue, Pattaya imposes fines up to 2,000 baht for improper waste disposal. Additional measures, such as high-mast lighting and CCTV, have been implemented to enhance safety and curb illegal activities.

 

While Pattaya continues to welcome global tourists, authorities urge visitors to adhere to local regulations to preserve the city's international appeal. Any violations, such as disturbances or littering, will be addressed with stringent enforcement, reported Siam Rath.

I live in East Pattaya & don't visit the beach these days.

I didn't see these events back in 2006.

Perhaps it now has something to do with phones, cameras & postings to be popular.🙃🙃

This is a beat up. The photos and videos are from after the fireworks festival, where 50k people go to watch, and yes some get drunk etc. and are still on the beach later in the night. There are people from all over, not just Indians.

It just depends what ethnic group you choose to video.

I'm in Pattaya now. Huge difference in just 5 years. Things are looking very filthy and rundown.

All I notice is Anti India and anti china and anti Russia bashing here online... as if the prostitu....  on larger scale was brought to Thailand by these countries... it was USA and other European countries who made it happen. Anyways till the time any tourist... anywhere in the world  whatever nationality behaves in a manner expected from them... it's no harm... people with prejudices can keep on ranting

Surely they can introduce a public by-law that prohibits sleeping on the beach. In the U.K. police have the right to move people on if they are loitering. Walking is giving public access per the law. Sleeping is loitering. The problem is enforcing it.

Dont think they save on accommodations but rather they maybe staying in a large room with more than 3 squeezed into a room which is common for Chinese n Indians. It’s their culture of living. 
The Thai government really has to re think their policy - majority or all Chinese n Indian real tourists don’t stay for more than one week because they will go back to their real jobs. Only opportunists stay longer to start illegal business in Thailand. They are attracting foreigners who will leech n take advantage of Thailand n Thais
