Thailand Rolls Out Free Condoms to Teens for Safe Valentine’s

In a significant move, the Deputy Spokesperson of the Prime Minister's Office in Thailand has announced a new initiative from the Department of Disease Control: free condoms for teenagers. This effort, launched on Valentine’s Day, is designed to emphasize the importance of safe sex and make sexual health resources more accessible to teens and young adults.

 

Throughout February, the Ministry of Public Health and its partners are running the "Love, You Can Choose: Youth Choices for SAFE SEX" campaign. This initiative is intended to help young people enjoy romance without the risks.

 

Key Features of the Campaign:

 

1. Protection Access: Free condoms are available at health service units and through the Paotang app. Government hospitals also offer Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) and Post-exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) medications.
2. Counseling Services: Teenagers can receive advice from counselors on everything from HIV screening to contraception. For questions, the hotline 1663 and LINE Chat Bot @teen_club are available.
3. Easy HIV Testing: Youths aged 15-24 can access free, stress-free HIV tests twice a year without the need for parental consent if they're over 18.
4. Rapid Treatment: Those diagnosed with HIV receive immediate antiretroviral therapy, ensuring support regardless of their financial situation.

 

 

Despite these proactive measures, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) remain a concern for Thai youths aged 15-24. Data reveals a worrying trend with Bangkok seeing infection rates more than double over five years. Syphilis, gonorrhea, and genital warts are the most prevalent, alongside 1,095 new HIV cases and 1,744 related deaths in 2024 among this age group.

 

Thailand's government recognizes that rising STD rates are linked to unsafe sexual practices. Through this initiative, they aim to promote prevention with a touch of humor, encouraging a love life that's safe and fulfilling.

People will have indiscriminate sex no matter what others say or do, but handing out condoms reduces the amount of children born into single parent families, families without father's involvement, children born into poverty, and children raised by grandparents because the "parents" felt the need to go elsewhere after the baby was born.

I am curious 2 things.... Why are so many members here twisting this OP into an American USAID problem? 

and Why does the government actually believe that 14 to 18 year old kids would find or make a way to a health service to get free condoms? 

Most kids that age do not want to lose face in such a way. Just as most kids that age would not pre-plan to go to some health clinic just to get free condoms. The government should offer these at schools or other places that are easily accessible to a kid. Jeez, the cost to get to the health clinic would be more than buying some condoms at 7.

We had condom machines in my french high-school and the "pilule du lendemain" (not sure in english, the day after pill or so..). usefull as otherwise, we would still have (unprotected) sex anyways with he risks encured (unsex (some of us at least)

Why are Thai girls not introduced to berth control methods, and get proper education not from the old 60 year old bat or the young 22-year-old barbie girls

 

The challenge is that the girls cannot turn or get assistance anywhere.

 

Thailand needs a Sunday night Sex with Sue call-in show.  Imagine if a TV station promoted that with the same rules that Sue Johansen had,

 

HIV/'STD screening should be free and available to all teens starting at Mat 1.

 

Being  teen girl in Thailand to me is worse than being a teen girl in the 60's and 70's in Canada.  Can you imagine girls going to mom to talk about sex when she really only has the 2 minute 3-inch wonder and the OLD school taboos to go by

 

Maybe that would be a good job for some of the older Bar girls sex education for girls in Nat schools so they know what they are getting into.
