Yes, using an agent for the 800k is a breach of the immigration laws, but those using an agent for the 800k is not what they are targeting with this policy.

I asked if they had all the correct documents and she told me they had, but the banks were not willing to open accounts for foreigners due to a recent crackdown.

I then suggested that perhaps they try an agent. She told me they had tried that too, but the agent wanted THB68,000 from each of them.

Guess I lucked out. Same thing happened to me at Laos-Thailand border (didn't get re-entry before crossing). Woman officer took me to private room and told me she'd give me a tourist visa and to go to my local Immigration Office and straighten this out.

Not every Thai officer is corrupt.

In an above described scenario, expat e.g. gives 15,000 to the agents account, agent gives 1900 baht to immigration office for extension of stay via retirement, agent keeps 3000 baht for postage & handling fee, and 10,000 baht goes to an account as specified by a "competent officer" as a traditional gift for service or 'sin nam jai'.

Sorry, people on retirement visa can not open bank accounts anymore.

Been to multiple branches, and everywhere the same answer.

If one is Legit and do the right thing than there's  no Reason why one would not be able to open a Bank Account   for an Extension  based on Retirement or Marriage / Work  / Business

As for Tourists  / short time Visitors  Do they Really Need a Bank  Account while they here?

That doesn't include the use of an Agent and the Agents  800 K. 🙏

The IO has Discretion to grant a extension with or without money  and thats how agents can get a extension

They want your money but not foreigners here longer term.

 

It has been this way since the 90's, when I first moved here.

 

Seen so many, probably 95% or higher, of foreigners that planned to stay, work or do business here, leave and go home or elsewhere.

 

Thailand isn't for everybody. 

 

With the current volumes of foreigners staying in Thailand longer term, I fully expect it to get more inconvenient, more difficult and more frustrating for the majority.

 

Thais are experts at the passive-aggressive approach.
