I think there is happiness, i dont think it can be achieved as long as youre a slave to impulse. Money is just numbers on a screen, sex is just a membrane creating friction and ejecting mucus. People need a purpose greater than just from external things

Chasing pleasure like the real or fictional Bob will never bring happiness. It becomes an addiction.

 

The feeling of happiness is a by product of living a good life. For the vast majority that's a strong combination of friends, family, faith (even if only in humanity) and work ( anything that contributes to another, even cooking a meal)

It may be the key to success, but it certainly won't lead to happiness.  🤷‍♂️

 

If the choice is to have a lot of "success", but be stressed out and miserable; or to live a humble lifestyle, but feel happy and contented, I think most sensible people would choose the latter.

 

A lot of "successful" people are very unhappy, probably because they have something missing in their life that they use the success to try and replace, but they can never really replace it, so they're always unhappy.

If someone were to feel like that, it's likely that something happened to them in their childhood that means they can either never be happy, or only feel happy when they experience some sort of overpowering external force, like earning a vast some of money or having a crowd of people cheer for them, but that feeling quickly goes away when the moment has passed.  They also feel far more deflated when something happens where they are made to feel inferior to someone else, which a regular person could likely shrug off.

Wanna know what creates Hell?  Unending wants.  Go out, buy a 10,000 THB dinner, drink the best booze, take designer drugs, have an orgy, wake up with a massive hangover, rinse, repeat - because - all the hedonism didn't slake those wants one bit.  You're still consumed by wants.  So to end the way I started...

Rich people striving to be richer usually are more stressed than poorer folk.  High blood pressure, anger issues, diabetes from eating rich food etc... good luck to them.

 

I'm relatively poor.  Without the trappings of fast cars, fast women, consumer goods etc, I'm very happy with my life. 

 

Why do I need more than 2 pairs of shoes (one pair for running and one pair for everything else)?  I only have 2 feet.

 

Why do I need many shirts and trousers?  I only have one body to clothe. 

 

Why do I need gold rings, bracelets and so on?  I don't need to impress anyone and surely to my God no woman would love me without the $$$ (all 3 of my ex-wives were only in it for the $$$ from me).

 

I'm not a Buddhist, but following a modest lifestyle without consumer goods has helped me to be stress-free and relatively healthy. (It also saves on checked-in luggage costs!)
