Angry with Trump, international tourists scrap their U.S. travel plans

International travel to the United States is expected to slide by 5 percent this year, contributing to a $64 billion shortfall for the travel industry, according to Tourism Economics. The research firm had originally forecast a 9 percent increase in foreign travel, but revised its estimate late last month to reflect “polarizing Trump Administration policies and rhetoric.”
“There’s been a dramatic shift in our outlook,” said Adam Sacks, president of Tourism Economics. “You’re looking at a much weaker economic engine than what otherwise would’ve been, not just because of tariffs, but the rhetoric and condescending tone around it.”

Airfares are so expensive I expect international travel to reduce everywhere.

I haven't been anywhere since COVID doubled airfares, before I was doing 6-8 flights a year.

You sure about that? Maybe you should stop projecting.

International tourism recovers pre-pandemic levels in 2024

. A majority of destinations welcomed more international tourists in 2024 than they did before the pandemic, while visitor spending also continued to grow strongly.

According to the latest World Tourism Barometer from UN Tourism, an estimated 1.4 billion tourists travelled internationally in 2024, indicating a virtual recovery (99%) of pre-pandemic levels. This represents an increase of 11% over 2023, or 140 million more international tourist arrivals, with results driven by strong post-pandemic demand, robust performance from large source markets and the ongoing recovery of destinations in Asia and the Pacific.

I just booked a flight from Perth to BKK return for 850 AUD (which is just 535 US Dollars), which is the same what I paid years ago and that flight is non-stop.

That's what happens why you secure your borders.

Shame on the Biden regime for counting illegal border crossers as "undocumented international travelers"!

I'm guessing you're joking. Which doesn't mitigate that fact that Trump's policies will hurt the American tourist industry. Well, maybe more Russians will visit.

Paywall to the article, but I’m guessing it’s long on rhetoric and short on facts.

In any event, we’d only have the press to thank.

Yes airfares are ridiculously expensive on some routes. However, that is a reflection of demand. Airlines have moved to dynamic pricing  and as demand has increased, so too have airfares.

Not really. Europeans and Canadians had easy access  for visits. Canadians are the most frequent  and biggest spending tourists.  As a class of visitor, they do not remain in the USA. They are choosing to stay at home.

Yeah, the Canadians love to come for the healthcare and weather.

I guess now they can go to Mexico or Cuba

Given Trump's over-the-top hostility to both countries, you make a fair point.

The United States has enough left wing socialist globalist wackos without more coming in. Let them go to China or Russian for their holiday. And now the left wing climate change charlatans are burning their Teslas. I just have to laugh at the hypocrisy of these people.

So, are you claiming that the people of countries insulted by Trump and Co. aren't coming to the US because they are left wing wackos? And what has burning Teslas got to do with any of  this? Your comment is unhinged.

Oh no, whatever you do don’t do that. That will break our hearts. The American people are so sick of parasites like Canada, good riddance. Fake friendliness to go along with being a fake friend.

According to Statistics Canada data released Monday, the number of Canadians driving to the US fell 23% in February compared with the same month last year, marking the second consecutive monthly decline and the second decline observed since March 2021.

Leisure bookings are also taking a hit. Flight Centre Travel Group, a major travel agency in Canada, told Business Insider it saw a 40% decrease in leisure bookings to the US in February year over year.

Why on earth would a tourist decide not to go to the USA because of Trump? You really need to stop reading made up stories from the wopo .

Outside the internet forum world very few act like you guys here. I was out every night last week, various different bars, different groups,  Trumps name didn't get mentioned once. You're in a DJTDS bubble.

5% percent less crowds still means the crowds are too much.

That will not be true if thats all you have left.

Thomas Sowell said it best.  There are no solutions.  Only compromises.

If Making America Great Again means a few less tourists, that's a good tradeoff.

Just possibly. Just maybe, it might be that they might just harbor the tiniest little bit of resentment over the fact that he's trying to damage their economies.

Only saddest, with high levels of DTDS like you guys here would bring politics into their holiday plans.

'Destroying economies' Slight over reaction to some reciprocal tariffs isn't it, actually, no, everything is an over reaction with regards to El' Trumpo.

I think you need some instruction in the use of quotes. Nowhere did I write "Destroying economies." And here once again for your delectation is the evidence Kwonitoy has provided that shows how contrary-to-fact your claims are:

I think the number will be far higher than 5%. I wouldn't doubt if it was closer to 50% . Everybody that I talk to is absolutely livid with the US at this point. There are very few people outside of his MAGA crowd that support his actions, and Trump seems to be going out of his way to make an enemy out of the entire planet.

What he doesn't understand, which is not surprising considering his extremely limited intellectual power, is that by spurning long held alliances he is isolating the US and diminishing their influence to a dramatic degree.

As an American, I think the world should just say no to America and to Disaster Don.
