I've lived in and traveled around Asia for over 50 years. What I've never been able to understand is why the people who live in these shacks turn the entire area around their homes into disgusting dumps. Doesn't matter where you go, if people are living in shacks, the area around them is just littered with garbage. Often so much so that plants stop growing.
If they had any dignity wouldn't it make sense to keep the area outside their homes clean?
40 years of Heavy Goods Vehicle driving in the UK, Europe and the Middle East, my experience was the vast majority of the public have no appreciation of how they get goods, either food or retail goods, let me say this, if you buy anything it will at some point have been on a truck.
All European trucking comes under EU rules, all very Health and Safety orientated, these rules over time have evolved to what we have today.
Back when my Father started HGV driving in the 1950's is what I think Thailand is like now, i.e. if it goes on the truck it ships.
The wages then were very low and it was imho considered a job you did if you had no other skills, it took say 30 years after loads of legalisation for wages to improve to decent levels and it was considered a skilled occupation.
I see the industry here in Thailand and feel sad for the drivers here, very low pay, terms and conditions, so until the accident rates are felt by the majority to be unacceptable they'll carry on regardless and you'll see incidents like this all the time.
I am not so sure Mexico or Costa Rica are really that cheap these days. If so man my people are really going they won't stay affordable for long. I actually moved back to the USA a few years back and just don't see the value in these sub-par locations like Colombia or Panama. I guess if you can't afford to live in America then beggars can't be choosers. Sort of sad when you have no choice but to be an economic refugee.
The problem with that is if you don't like it and are that close to the edge financially you aren't going to be able to move back should you change your mind. Luckily i moved back when houses were still cheap and they have doubled or more since Covid. I dopn't think many of the Thai expats could move home now if they wanted to.
Looks to me like he's good at cutting the fat, corruption interruption and waste as well. It's high time you <removed> people got a grip on reality, much like this clown in the article. I'd like to see lunatic asylums built with the saved money that usually goes to the Demoncrats and their ilk.
