If the new law is passed, teenagers would be able to work overnight jobs on school days. They are currently prevented from working earlier than 6:30 am or later than 11 pm per state law. Other changes including eliminating working time restrictions on teenagers aged 14 and 15 if they are home-schooled and ending guaranteed meal breaks for 16 and 17 year olds.

You couldn't make this up and have people find it believable

I find that to be a good thing, and will build character while preparing them for the future workforce.  May even learn a valuable trade.

 

I worked while in high school, illegally till 0100 hrs on school nights and back to back 12 hr shifts on weekends.   All by choice, simply because I wanted to earn money, 'legally'.   Other option was being a criminal.

 

Guess it's not for everyone, but gave me some good work experience & ethics.  Teenagers need to prepare for the real world, not be cuddled.   Even better if they are self employed at an early age.  Wish I though of that earlier.  Wouldn't have wasted more than a few years being an underpaid, unappreciated employee.

Working overnights while in school is too much to ask. That a child needs some work skills before they enter the workforce is a sure thing, but a couple of hours a weekend is enough to learn. Selling lemonade has always been a good start for children, as schools don't do a thorough job of preparing children for their working lives after school. It may have worked for you but wouldn't for everyone. Children need sleep just as we do, but even more important because their play levels are usually higher, or at least they used to be before phones. The earlier a child earns money doing something, even if it's working for their parents, doing small jobs for a little cash, the better they understand what it feels like having their own money.

Agreed.  Look up the history of summer vacation from school and even spring break.  Both were implemented to allow the kids to help around the farm.

 

I'm not seeing where any kids are being forced to work when they don't want to.  Just given the opportunity.

 

There a lot of chimneys in the northeast. Shove them up those and that will give them more experience as cheap labor. Abs build character. 

Cotton picking in the southern states. 

Bring back flogging if they are lazy. 

Really, who needs education?

Starting out selling anything gives children a sense of pride, making their own money. It doesn't matter what it is, and everyone buys lemonade when they see kids selling it for that reason. They know.
