And they don't have boxing where you're from? Is regular boxing not "primitive"? As far as the "boring"part, did you never come to understand that your not liking something doesn't dictate what others should feel about it? This goes back to the gladiators - people like the drama of watching people battle it out. It gets their own aggression out by proxy. All contact sports are primitive. So I imagine that actual war also bores you? 

It's very sad. People forget how dangerous these sports are. American football as well. You're lucky to get away with mere brain damage at times. Any blow to the head or vital organs can kill you.

That still leaves you with tennis, table tennis, badminton, squash, racquets, athletics, bowls, bowling, weightlifting, volleyball, sailing, snooker, surfing, swimming, rowing, motorsport, gymnastics, diving, curling and archery, to name but a few. Enjoy !

Sad. Apart from Ramon Dekkers, I’ve hardly seen any farang who had a real chance in Muay Thai. Ramon Dekkers died at 43 while riding his bike — a legend. However, deaths in Muay Thai are very rare. In contrast, base jumping and wingsuiting are truly risky.

Never understood this "died doing something he loved", as if that is somehow comforting.

 

I'm willing to bet that if we could ask Joseph, "Would you rather die getting kicked in the ribs doing something you loved at age 30, or instead taken up lawn bowling and spent your 30s+ chasing women, getting married, having kids, watching them grow up, and retiring at 60 to a beach front home on Koh Samui?", he'd pick the latter.

 

To each his own, but it seems to me life is too precious to risk it playing a barbarian. Learning something for the sake of self-defense, as there are many miscreants in the world, might make sense, but to willfully ask for brain or organ damage seems a waste.

 

Like a few folks here, I'm not a fan of sports where the intent is to hurt and injure the opponent. Inadvertent injuries in sports I can accept, as I played US football, got my shares of elbows playing basketball, and took a few 90 mile an hour pitches in the leg and arm on the baseball diamond, but sports where the goal is brain damage, no thanks. The MMA craze among the goobers in the US is bizarre, as if humans have decided to stop evolving, or the idea of "being a man" involves caveman skills rather than doing things like bettering oneself, pursuing knowledge, being responsible for loved ones, adding value to society, etc.

 

Why not just bring back gladiators who slaughter each other to please the masses. Heads and limbs cut off, intestines spilled on the ground, lions eating people....yea, manly stuff! Bread and circuses for the great unwashed! Let's sink to the lowest common denominator!

Hi, thank you for posting additional information related to Muay Thai.

Several years ago, a friend of mine(young man in his mid 20s, from the N/America), was attending M/Thai school nearby.

He said that K/Boxing comes with greater danger(even more than western boxing), so that the whole match has only 5 rounds(instead of 8-12). 

 

After he completed his course, he stood on the ring as the "professional" a few times.

Fortunately, he won all of the matches involved,  and safely came back without injuries.

 

Even though I have never done any boxing myself, I still know about its common aftereffects; punch drunk syndrome(caused by internal brain damage). 

Symptoms are: chronical headache, nausea, numbness, loss of memory and balance, and dementia etc...

Madam's family are into Muay Thai bigtime, nephew is local Poo Yai Baan, trainer, and promotor, loads of near relatives and friends are ex-fighters, some were good in their day, it is a big family tradition.

I willingly sponsor some local fighters, and regularly attend fights within 100kms.

As the only "Falange" in the village that participates in all the local customs, including encouraging the local Muay Thai boxers I feel I'm well respected and always invited to Family occasions and ceremonies at our 2 local temples.

Perhaps not intended but you are  giving a textbook example of a self delusion. You are in a small inconsequential  village where local uneducated people engage in an activity that is all that they can do. Those with intelligence are pursuing something  more productive.

In the societal hierarchy, the village  muay thai fighters are on the same level as general labour; disposable and interchangeable. A significant number who last  more than a year and who actually fight will end up  with brain damage, manifesting itself by  reduced IQs, and in other cases, Parkinsons, or early onset dementia and other neurological disease.

It is not unusual for local fights, like boxing in other countries to be fixed. They are organized for cheap entertainment and for revenue. Young  Thai kids are fed a false dream just like the dead end kids of the farang urban cities were tossed into the meat grinder of the ring. Foreign fighters  are churned. In and out. Some pay to play and pay to win. Others actually believe they have a chance at something.

Muay Thai is an awesome sport, it's my 2nd favorite to jiu-jitsu. 

Age doesnt matter, you can start any age, just go slowly dont compete. I have competed in jj but not anymore. competitions can be dangerous if you are not prepared,.

 

To compete, you need is a very strong core around the ribs to engulf your core, that takes 5-10 years to develop.
