Marine Le Pen’s Political Future in doubt, verdict rocks French far right

Ever considered looking at other offences of corruption in France to juxtapose with the treatment of Le Pen. The offences differ in detail, but they are broadly similar in nature — all involve misuse of public funds or negligence in public office:

<> Marine Le Pen: Convicted in 2025 for embezzling EU funds by using them to pay party staff in France rather than for EU parliamentary work. Result: 4-year sentence (2 suspended), €100,000 fine, 5-year ban from office

<> Christine Lagarde: Found guilty in 2016 of negligence over a €400m payout to a businessman while finance minister. No fine, no ban, no sentence imposed.

<> Jacques Chirac: Convicted in 2011 of embezzlement and abuse of public trust — creating fake jobs while mayor of Paris. Received a 2-year suspended sentence, no political ban.

Proportionality …. hmmmm, arguably, Le Pen’s case involves a smaller financial scale than Lagarde’s or Chirac’s — yet she received the harshest penalty in terms of political consequences. That raises valid concerns about consistency and timing, especially with an election on the horizon; and we worry about the ominous signs of a two their justice system in the UK.

Irrelevant comparison.

Not the same offenses and not the same law (and not the same court). :coffee1:

The law applied in the case of Marine Le Pen was voted after the two cases you mentioned.

  • A justified verdict. Kudos to the judge for not caving into political pressure. Embezzling money from the EU, especially when you are anti-EU, to help finance one's own political ambitions, is siniste

Leftist activist judges barring right wing political candidates will not end well.

Especially in France.

Mark my words.

Another fine demonstration on how the woke leftist liberals are desperate in Europe in trying to muzzle what a majority of their own people want.

On a different note, one may or may not like Trump. But more then one european would do anything to have Trump in charge of their country or within the European Union.

Ah the simple black and white world of JonnyF.

Every time any right wing person gets in trouble it's a left wing conspiracy. Sometime, you know, they are just crooks who get caught and rightfully punished. Odd thought, huh?

No doubt there is more than one European supporter of Trump but a very tiny - and decreasing - number of Europeans would want Trump to be any near the government of their nations.

"Here are 3 leftist parties, choose one. We banned the rest".

The title of the thread would suggest otherwise.

I'm just glad this failed in the US.

Go Trump!.

Go Trump!.

Which party has been banned? None!

And the first party to be convicted for exactly the same offense and according to the same law was a right of center party which has supported Macron from the first day. And the persons convicted have also received an inegibility sanction because it is mandated by the law.

You don't know what you are talking about and just post your lame propaganda!

Yawn. More nonsense.

I honestly don't know which world you live in to see things in the manner you do.

He’s far from Maga than you think!

But he dislikes the left as their efforts to control mass migration has been a

big travesty, in western civilized countries.

Thank you for that. I've said it before but I'm a socialist ( small s ) but that doesn't mean I have to agree with the idiocy that the loony left are wanting. More about public health for free and the tax payer owning major organisations  eg electricity, rail, water etc. Selling them to private ownership has been a disaster.

here's another example that disproves your contention that all left leaning posters are just parroting MSM.

As early as March 7th, I was predicting that Trump's autocratic behavior and tariff policies were going to negatively impact demand for treasuries. See my post below:

It has only been in recent days that the news cycle has started to highlight the potential of foreign holders of US debt using this as leverage in a trade war.

Was there no damning evidence? How then could they prove she was guilty? Was the case over in 5 minutes?

Criminals always think they can get away with it.

Have you considered that Trump wants a crash? IMO he does, or perhaps that is just wishful thinking on my part.

The possibility that Trump might deliberately induce a fiscal crisis in order to (1) abandon the dollar to bitcoin, and (2) use this as an excuse to renege on America's national debt has very much occurred to me. These fears are heightened even more when Trump's history of filing for bankruptcy and his cozy relationship with cryptocurrency hucksters are considered.

It has long been apparent to me that endlessly increasing "growth" is a nonsense and is inherently unsustainable, as the "growth" only benefits the rich, and destroys the environment.

Whether Trump agrees with me or not, if he is the one that brings it down he is IMO only hastening the inevitable end of the present rotten and corrupt world order.

Someone or something has to end the rush to a cashless society, one way or another.
