The tariffs imposed were based on US trade deficits. Just because some tariffs are lowered a few percentage points doesn't mean that Vietnamese suddenly start buying US cars, Duh.

And who would have expected the car market to change overnight? Duh!

@dinsdale

This is not about tariffs, but jostling for position. If you listen to what his advisors are saying, the tariff strategy is but the first step. Think of it as a three step plan.

The 'tariffs' are simply a way to get everyone talking to you.

Well, there are 195 countries in the world right now, so that's a fair chunk of them. Eliminate island nations and the very poor countries in Africa, and that would include a big percentage of the countries that count.

What would?

How it started - Trumps tariffs are 100% stupid, like Trump is, like his supporters are. It will ruin and bankrupt us all.

How its going - 50 of the most consequential nations are panicking to cancel their punituve tariffs on US goods. Massive win for Trump. Massive egg on face for the entire left.

How are the hivemind reacting? Acting dumb with a "what would?" missive🤣

@JackGats It's a great victory to force poor countries to open their markets fully to the U.S.A.? So how can they compete on such an uneven playing field? Let's not forget that the U.S.A got rich from the very system that the MAGAers are currently criticising. You would not have been able to project power in the same way and you would not have your bases all over the world.

So now we are seeing the sorting of the spheres of influence. 'Friends' will get relief or simply won't be targeted.

I think Scott Bessent mentioned three colours to represent who goes where. The tariffs are just part of the plan.

Ah, so Trump is playing the long game? So when he's talking about sort term pain for US tax payers he means the next 20 years? Because that's how long it'll take for Vietnam's GDP to rise so much than the average guy can start buying US made cars (assuming, of course, that US car makers start making cars that the rest of the world wants).

@SunnyinBangrak Your post is pure hyperbole. This isn't about tariffs, but a reordering. A new world order so to speak. That's why Trump doesn't care about collateral damage. It's just part of a bigger plan.

Is it a good one for our planet? I have no idea.

Not happening overnight is not 20 years, and "long term" was not mentioned in my post. Stop exaggerating. Is it your job here to create a negative spin and everything people say?

Both those companies' foundings occurred before the Nazis took power. Maybe it's time to send you back to the classroom.

Saying something doesn't happen overnight generally means it will happen in the longer term and it was you that brought that up.

And what exaggeration are you talking about. Do you disagree that it will probably take something like 20 years for the average Vietnamese to be able to afford American cars?

Negative spin? Is that your way of saying posters should stop disagreeing with you?

List of foreign suppliers of parts for the Chevrolet:

"Foreign-made parts are often used in electronics and some interior components.
Some examples of countries where Chevy parts are sourced from include:
Two South Korean companies.
Three Canadian and Brazilian companies.
Four Japanese companies.
Five Mexican companies.
Individual partners also exist in Colombia, Argentina, Ecuador, Hungary, Egypt, Thailand, and India."

List of foreign supplier of the apple pie:

Mrs Rosa Lopez from Mexico, green card holder and owner of the local bakery named "Payaso Naranja.

OK, granted, if you want to single out Vietnam as an example that tariff adjustments won't make US-made cars affordable for 20 years in Vietnam, yes, I agree. I don't think Vietnam is a target destination for US-made cars and is a fringe market at best. I don't even know if US-made cars would be of much interest to the Vietnamese market even if they were affordable.

"Negative spin" is about you taking everything people say and putting a negative spin on it. What else could it mean? Your agenda in these threads is quite clear - whinge about anything and everything that Trump does or has done in the past.

You cannot exclude the African countries as they make up a fair percentage of the so called 50!

Where else does it get it's "facts" from?
