A 22-year-old American tourist from Washington State has died in Phuket after returning to his hotel in the early hours of the morning, reportedly unwell and vomiting following a night of drinking with friends.

The young man had been staying at the Rabbit Hotel, located near the old bus station (Phuket Bus Terminal 1) on Phang Nga Road, alongside his girlfriend, a Myanmar national.

According to police, the American left the hotel on the evening before, to meet up with friends for drinks. He returned at approximately 04:30 on 6 April, visibly ill and vomiting. His concerned girlfriend immediately contacted emergency services, and he was rushed to Vachira Phuket Hospital. Despite efforts to save him, he was later pronounced dead.

The incident was formally reported to Phuket City Police Station at around 07:00 that morning. Police have since launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the tourist’s death.

Investigators are currently awaiting the results of a forensic medical examination to establish the exact cause of death. At present, police have not yet identified any foul play in connection with the case.

Authorities have not released the man’s name, pending notification of next of kin. The U.S. Embassy in Bangkok has been informed to assist with repatriation and further consular matters.

Hopefully the autopsy will perform a check for methanol poisoning.

Quite likely he was not drinking exactly what he was ordering, methanol etc can be lethal and when it comes to money peoples morals so often become non existent! Very sad for his family and friends! I hope forensics reveal the real autopsy details ???

Last night in my restaurant a couple came in to order takeaways, she had obviously been drinking and during the short time they were here she collapsed in my toilet, her boyfriend called an ambulance and she left on a stretcher barely conscious, you have to be so careful what & where you drink!

Out for a drink with his mates until 04:30, I don't think he was drinking PG Tips

Youngsters frequently stay out that late , could be anything that caused him to die

When my friends ask if I have any advice for traveling in Thailand, number one on the list is "don't drink anything that comes in a bucket".

I hope we get a follow up after the investigation, but I won't be holding my breath.

I wouldn't need telling not to drink "come in a bucket ”...🤮

Friends and girl-friend all I would presume were with him and therefore also drinking , so why did they now suffer same or similar symptoms ?

one should always be careful of spiked drinks in Thailand

Agree on that one! I always take great care when drinking spiked drinks in Thailand, sometimes it is a bit difficult though when no one tells me they have been spiked.

His friends would likely have also have been poisoned. But we don't know yet, do we? Pretty sad for someone so young. "Partying".

I am a tea bottler, never even one beer in Thailand the many years I was there. But, I was older. If I were in my 20's when I first went there this could have been me very easily.
