A foreign national, whose details have not been disclosed, suffered serious injuries in the early hours of the morning of 7 April, after losing control of his high-powered motorcycle and crashing into a traffic light control box at the San Pa Koi intersection in central Chiang Mai.

 

The incident occurred at approximately 05:25, on Charoen Muang Road in Mueang District. CCTV footage captured the moment the big bike veered off course, slamming into the traffic control cabinet. The rider was flung across the pavement, landing violently against a large concrete flower pot.

 

The injured man’s fellow rider, also a foreigner, immediately stopped to assist, while local residents, awakened by the deafening crash, rushed to the scene. Emergency services were quickly contacted and the injured rider was transported to McCormick Hospital in a critical condition.

 

The crash caused significant damage to the traffic signal system, leaving the intersection without functioning lights and resulting in widespread power outage.

 

A local resident, 46-year-old Mrs Sasivimon, who lives near the intersection, recounted that she heard a loud crash and ran outside to find the injured foreign motorcyclist lying motionless, bleeding from the mouth and ears. His helmet had been thrown off during the impact. A companion, also riding a big bike, attempted to render aid.

Mrs Sasivimon said a witness on a nearby motorcycle claimed the two foreigners had been racing along Chang Klan Road, crossing the Nawarat Bridge and heading down Charoen Muang Road at high speed. The rider reportedly lost control as he approached the San Pa Koi traffic lights, crashing into both the control cabinet and a nearby police post before his body struck the planter.

 

She added that after the ambulance had transported the victim to hospital, she later found a necklace belonging to the injured man at the crash site and handed it over to hospital staff.

 

Authorities continue to investigate the incident.

I hope you 3 posters above are very happy with yourselves. Making joke out of a an accident that resulted in a critical condition. Sure, it´s stupid to race on big bikes in the city or anywhere. Still not much to make fun about.

I don't have much sympathy for motorcyclists.

They drive as though they own the roads and are in a Formula 1 race.

And endanger themselves and others. 

The only reason anyone even drives one of these things is to show off.

I drive one because it avoids the gridlock and the lack of parking spaces in Chiang Mai.

But it is important to have a full face helmet and do the strap up.

It´s also quite clear that you have never been riding a real motorbike, as you would then know better why most people ride them. You kind of ride a motorbike, not drive.

Why are you saying they are meant to go at dangerous speeds. You could say the same about cars too. If an experienced rider, then can handle higher speed, if not experienced or secure, have do go slower. As usual everyone needs to have a license, wear a helmet and stay off the booze. Out of your posts, it sounds like the only safe ride would be a wheelchair with seatbelt and handbrakes.

It's true. Cars are meant to go at dangerous speeds. That's why there's a story of a Ferrari crashing ocasionally. 

But cars are much safer. 

And motorcycles seem to attract daredevils, but I may be generalizing too much. Maybe there's a lot of motorcycle riders who have a good head on their shoulders.

Nha, you have not offended me at all. I was just confused by your posts. And, yes, there are many more rider that have ca good head, than the ones you read about in the news. News are for selling, and writing that 19 000 000 people everyday take themselves safely to and back from work just doesn´t sell good.

Really though, there are 350cc step through scooter style motorcycles, then there are 125cc standard looking motorcycles…

… all are capable of speeds that will cut a person in half if wiping out I to the wrong obstacle.

nah screw that guy he could have easily killed an innocent person. Those aren't roads you should ever be going fast on and crashing like this. Since it was so early he may have been drunk too.

"In Thailand, popular 400cc scooters include the Suzuki Burgman 400 and the BMW C 400 GT" (goggled it). I have seen some of these 400cc scooters and they are absolute beasts.

I wouldn't 'cling onto' any such wording... 

 

It could mean a 1000cc Ducati - it could be a 150cc CBR.....     the comment is very subjective but authors may use it to add further colour to a report.

 

Its the same as the 'big bike' argument that often pops up here.
