In a sweeping crackdown on illegal residents, Phuket's Provincial Immigration Bureau apprehended a Russian national yesterday for overstaying his visa by nearly a year. Part of an operation running from April 7 to 11, the initiative targets foreigners with visa violations and arrest warrants.

Officers arrested 30-year-old Sergey at a luxury hotel in central Phuket, where he admitted to overstaying his visa by 332 days. To evade detection, Sergey reportedly changed accommodations frequently. Though details of his stay remain sparse, it is unclear how he sustained himself financially in Thailand.

Charged under Section 81 of the Immigration Act for living in Thailand with an expired visa, Sergey faces potential penalties including a fine of up to 20,000 baht, imprisonment, or both. Deportation and a re-entry ban to Thailand will follow.

This latest arrest aligns with heightened actions against over-stayers in the region. Previous detentions include an Indian man in Phuket who overstayed for 668 days and a German man in Isaan found with methamphetamine. A British national was also detained in Chiang Mai for a staggering 25-year overstay.

As authorities tighten oversight, the message is clear: visa violations will not be tolerated. These efforts aim to ensure legal compliance and bolster security, reflecting Thailand's broader initiative to manage its foreign resident population effectively, reported The Thaiger.

Tightening oversight, ok, but beheading?

Looking at his man boobs, he isn't one of those Russians from "the white lotus".

Just deport him with a 10 year re-entry ban..

The Thai government are paying the price for letting so many more countries enter Thailand 2 or 3 years ago visa free and are no suffering the consequences.Listen to the people of the country for a change and not be so greedy.

Has Phuket now been taken over by the Russians? A secret operation ordered by Vladimir perhaps?

Actually, I don't think most of us were looking, but hey, each to his own. Isn't TIT the actual national slogan?

Pretty dumb fella. There are so many ways to live in TH trouble-free, yet he took the "outlaw" path. 30 y.o. and that dumb? Pathetic

It's now the 2nd language on the island, No joking I was sitting outside Starbucks in Rawai the other morning and all you could hear was Russian being spoken,

If the Thai immigration and police really looked hard and were more consistent

No doubt would find more Foreigners overstaying in Country
