One of the main tenets of the sanctuary laws is that the cops won't report them to ICE after they've been arrested for crimes.  So the ones being protected are criminals, and not just for crossing the border.

I can only presume that the citizens in these sanctuary cities voted for their local representatives and are in favour of the policies (that they voted for).

Then along comes the federal government and says, We don't care who you elected and what policies you voted for, we don't need your form of democracy.
