Triple pricing for BTS/MRT from September

Ok, that makes it clearer. So you went across multiple lines that aren't integrated - they are separate fares on the Green and then pink lines.  You exit the paid area on the green line and then enter a new paid area on the pink line, ergo two separate trips. As I correctly stated the most expensive single trip is 62 baht.

I'll take it back that you made it up, but you definitely were misleading, albeit I am sure not deliberately.

You could spend 62 baht on the green line, then go take a trip on the MRT, then do the red line, then one of the monorails and then the ARL and complain that it's expensive on the train for a journey. Easy to mislead.

I understand your point.

But what we did is just a straight trip from Nonthaburi back to Onnut by mass transport.

Nothing circular or back and forth,  no detours. Yes, we had to change trains - but even going from Onnut to Saphan Thaksin (where we started to take the boat) we had to change trains (I know,  one is from light green to pink, another one from light green to dark green...huge difference). Changing trains in a mass transport network is normal.

The price,  after all, was 107 B - and I really couldn't believe it.

"Triple pricing for BTS/MRT from September"   The title of your OP is sensational and misleading. You make it sound like, starting in September, they will triple the prices for all foreigner

  • So this thread is just total BS.  As nothing in the news blip states 'triple' fare.    You obviously never use the rail lines, or you'd know there is no 80 baht fare.  Until recently, with t

Correct, I was nailed by a "Ticket Inspector" at Phrom Phong a couple of years ago.  He was looking at the concession lights.   Did not fine me but did take my Elder Rabbit card that had a lot of credit on it.   Not worth the bother of getting another one, use a regular Rabbit now.

The new government under Anutin has cancelled the 20B-fares.

Probably,  because Anutin likes foreigners so much.

Be very careful!

The fine for using an Elder Card when not entitled is up to 30 times the maximum normal fare!

Security do watch for invalid users and the automatic gates have a "concession lamp" which lights different colours if a concession card is in use.

Crossy, do you happen to know how long the Elder Card is good for?  I mean is there like a 5 year expiration from the time you purchased it?  I guess I could ask next time I top up but I have been hesitant to call attention to it.  The Elder Card saves me about 1000 baht per month as I use it to get to work and back.  Not a big deal but it is nice.

Edit:  Chat GPT says it never expires unlike the Rabbit card which has a 7 year expiry.

Putting that together:

  • The Elder MRT Card itself doesn’t expire automatically after a fixed calendar period (e.g. 5 years or 7 years) just because of age.

  • What does matter is usage: if you don’t use the card at all for 2 years, you risk losing its ability to travel with it.

  • If you keep using it (at least once every 1–2 years), then it remains valid.

The physical card does have an expiry date, you can check next time you re-load in a machine.

I think mine is 10 years from the date of issue.

Thanks.  I did not realize you could top up the Elder Card by machine. I have always done it at the cashier.  I will give that a try.

Not all the machines do it, look for the newer ones with a card "pocket" on the right hand side.

Drop the card in the pocket and the machine will prompt for what you want to do.

EDIT Machines look like this.

Oh, I topped my card up at the cashier a couple days ago and discovered that the card expiration date is displayed on the top of the register monitor, which also shows the card value before and after the transaction.  I am good to go until August of 2030!

This 20b for Thai is a disaster for us expats. Trains now crowded, with lower class Thai too who behave like monkeys.

Makes me want to leave actually.

Yeah, I agree. Travelling on the BTS is a nightmare, always overcrowded unable to get on the train at some stations closer to SIAM.

I'll stick to the MRT, not so crowded all day like the BTS, and I get a discount with an Elder Card
