Microsoft is going down the same path as Nokia, just more slowly.   Had a huge slice of market share, but ultimately went broke.

And the same with Facebook. I, like many others, are now receiving an endless stream of irrelevant ads which need to be deleted before I get to real correspondence. Now I have happily moved to WhatsApp (Line in Thailand) with no cr*ppy adverts.

I checked out Teams.  Straight away I could see it was business orientated, and nothing at all like Skype.  Even "Teams Free" which is their basic offering, was nothing like Skype.    I will

  • Yes, I too have tried Teams as the alternative to Skype, but it in no way replicates it, as in being able to make cheap voice calls to landline numbers, (typically banks etc). There must be a better a

Many thanks. I only used Skype for outgoing (no incoming) calls to landlines. Now I have installed Yolla and I'm pleased with the outcome.

I hope you get a commission from them.

Me too . Only outgoing calls and no videos . Had an email today from Skype saying , that for existing customers who still have credit in their accounts , can continue to use the calls / dialing pad until their funds are spent .

Meta (Facebook) also owns WhatsApp, which doesn't give me a lot of confidence in relation to privacy with WhatsApp.

Yolla does not have an unlimited calls / minutes plan.  Fine for casual users, not so good for frequent use.

I am convinced that SOME company will step up and take the place of Skype.  It had too many users to just throw away on the basis that it was "old technology".  Like many others who live in Asia, I used Skype to call cell phones and landlines in the USA.  Microsoft Teams has no such usability and it's maddening to try to replace simple technology such as Skype with software that is aimed at corporate workgroups and such. When large companies buy software from smaller companies, they always seem to ruin the product.

I am sure many VOIP companies seeing a spike in new users have increased their bandwidth, considerably, and added to their servers.  The Teams user experience is completely different to Skype, so many will be looking for something similar to Skype and will not use Teams.

A few years ago, Microsoft should have introduce "Skype for Home" and "Skype for Business" or similar.  Skype for Home could have remained pretty much the same, no extra work needed, just keep doing what they have been doing, and Skype for Business could have been basically what Teams is, to compete with the likes of Zoom etc, particularly when the pandemic hit.

Microsoft did nothing, so Skype was losing users and profits, so rather than revive a global brand with some R&D, they decided to kill it off because they can afford to.

I mostly use Skype to call 0800 numbers in the uk (which are free) and occasionally non-free calls - I wonder if the "free" stuff will continue if I make one paid call every few months (I believe the credit expires if not used or at least it used to) - I still have credit

If "the free stuff continues" then how is Skype actually shutting down?

I predict March 26 will be the end, credit, or no credit.

I posted one of these topics that Skype had 300 million customers in 2016 and only 30 million now.

So I guess they don't care where those 30 million have gone.

And Teams is now 300 million customers most likely corporate/business not personal.

Tried to use my old link to Skype in my browser and it relocated to <deleted>ty Teams.  Looked at the notifiy email and there is a new site for "old" Skype: https://calling.web.skype.com - seems to much the same - my history is still there ans more importantly my credit
