Great news for Thai bill-payers! From April 30, millions will see a drop in their electricity costs thanks to a new rate change by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC). The Fuel Tariff (Ft) rate is set to decrease from 4.15 baht to 3.99 baht per unit, impacting the upcoming May to August billing cycle.

This announcement aligns with government efforts to alleviate financial pressures on households and businesses. Poonpat Leesombatpiboon, the ERC's Secretary-General, will officially announce the rate change supported by a proposal from the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT). The key objective is to ease living costs and mitigate energy expenses for consumers.

The ERC acknowledges the reduction as a reflection of the government's commitment to controlling energy costs. However, this adjustment delays EGAT’s recovery of the expenses it absorbed to protect consumers.

The Accumulated Factor (AF), which includes expenses like the difference in actual vs. collected natural gas prices, is currently at a staggering 14.59 billion baht. Had rates stayed at 4.15 baht per unit, EGAT could have started recuperating from these mounting costs.

EGAT’s total outstanding cost absorption is estimated to be around 70 billion baht. By the end of August, reductions are expected to bring this figure down to 60.47 billion baht. Furthermore, an additional 15.08 billion baht from gas pricing discrepancies is still due for collection.

The official announcement will be detailed during a press briefing on April 30, at 1 pm, at the ERC offices in Bangkok. During this briefing, Dr Poonpat will outline the adjustment measures and discuss the anticipated impact on consumers.

As the summer heat rises, Thai households and businesses can breathe a sigh of relief with some economic reprieve on their energy expenses.

On a really hot day , I can save 1,5 THB !

No seriously , electricity is cheap here.

Back "home" , more like an average of 12 B/kWh.

And that is with awful " smart" meters.
