What an achievement! Malcolm, even an incontinent, 90+ old guy with a walker is very popular with the bar girls.

I not what you are trying to say but you don’t understand the special connection we have.

i can tell they genuinely like me.

many of us are not isolated - we live in Thailand with Thai people and families... we speak Thai - and have conversations with real and thoughtful and caring people... and we don't discriminate against or dislike people because they may have a disease that we don't... I have a diabetic neighbor who is 45 kilos - - you want to make fun of her too?

You come across as someone who is definitely isolated and can see the impact on your mental health, one symptom is eating too much

I live in Pattaya, I've got to get out of here, it's no longer Thailand.   ...  I want to move to a better place with normal foreigners.

Good luck with that one ... :cheesy:

It isn’t just a sexual or money thing.

It is genuine connection with many of them.

This month I have helped 5 with school uniforms, books etc. for their kids.

The Thai school year starts in May unlike back home. April is the hottest month so they have their summer holidays then.

I've "talked" to family and friends on social media, but actually verbally speak with a "farang" or any other non-Thai?
I can't ever remember.  That long ago.

Most commonly I speak with the other farang residents of my condo.

Nice, pleasant, sensible people. Maybe 10 in all, some of whom don't want to engage.

I agree with the OP that in general I tend to be reluctant to engage farangs when out and about.

My experience is that I find myself trying extricate myself from any conversation as opposed to wanting to exchange contact info.

Bores, scammers, braggarts, are over-represented here.

If your experience is different, more power to you.

I cant remember the last time I spoke to a farang, lets say before covid apart from that it doesn't bother me, I speak to more Thai people and a couple of Burmese who always pass by and check to see Im ok,

If I go out early in the morning around the beach there was a couple of farangs I would speak to because of their dogs, but they moved to Khao Lak, I stop for coffee it's Thais then maybe stop for some food on the way home it's Thai's again, And there's my wife I speak to her all day,

Using AN as a sampling of what one may encounter, if initiated a conversation with a farang stranger ... it's a scary world out there beyond the cul-de-sac (dead end soi) :cheesy:

Thank you for telling me. I have a 13 year old and a 6 year old. Both girls, so I am aware of when the schools start and stop. Now back to your not "just" a sexual or money thing.

Oh dear! Where to begin???? "just", must mean that sex is a bit on the table anyway. After that, it seems money oriented as you helped with books, uniforms and so on for 5 of their kids. Or, did you get that for free? They got you hooked, always ready to be reeled in. They have made you live in the belief that they really care about you. They are professionals in that area. It just reminds me about the many stories of the 1 or 2 week tourist. He comes, meet a girl and hook up for all the time he is here. Before go home, they change online messenger accounts and phone numbers. When home, can´t stop think, talk almost everyday until he believes he is the one and only. Start helping and sending money. Only thing is that the girl are that friendly to 15 more foreigners, who also believe they are the one. It´s their work to be your best friend with extra benefits.

Why ya gotta be so mean?

What he said seems harmless enough.

Hey! What is mean? I am just explaining the reality. Is it better to let people live in a bubble of false believe? IMO, that would be more mean.

This morning at the gym, last night at a birthday party, being an active member of 3 motorbike groups we arrange tours and social events, foreigners from different parts of the world plus Thais. Of course the conversations do tend to involve motorbikes. My condo only has a few foreign owners, I'm a committee member so they tend to speak to me rather than the manager, I then speak with the manager. This includes Thais as well.

Mostly great replies to my post, but I've clearly touched on a sensitive subject with a few posters lol!  (I won't say who in case it sets you off...)

In my Jomtien condo, most people are Russian/Eastern European, and almost all of them are pot-heads.  In my country abode in south Thailand, there are very few foreigners.  I'm staying there for most of my time (I can't stand the smell of cannabis smoke, so I might 'drop' the Jomtien condo soon)

Appears I was spot on in the hermit thread.

50% hermit.  50% nutters.

Limited farang contacts due my vetting process.  Within 2 minutes my decision is made.  Cammo cargo shorts, sweat stained Singha wife beater or man buns don’t even get 2 minutes.

OP has some valid points.

Maybe two years ago. I used to stop in and say hello to some old colleagues at MUIC whenever I would go to the Mahidol branch of Bangkok Bank. It was still the closest branch to me. But they closed it, and I haven't gone back to MU.

Funny you should mention cannabis, couple of days ago I was approached by a resident in my condo, a Japanese tenant was smoking weed all day on his balcony, starting at around 6am, coughing his guts up as well, anyway he's now been spoken to by the manager that this was unacceptable, he now goes outside the building to smoke, so all is good.

Many isolated farangs on this forum it seems, not good for your mental health

Not talking to other foreigners doesn't mean you're isolated. Some here speak Thai or at least to communicate with locals. Isolation comes from depression and it's a totally different ballgame, and that requires help. Also, you can't guess what other members here do, even if they tell you something that has you wonder, unless you know them very well personally.

I am on the top (15th) floor of this building, so I can have access to the flat roof for my radio ham antennas.  Unfortunately, all 14 floors below me sit on their balconies and smoke pot, so the smell wafts up...

Asking those who live in Thailand....

The last time that I spoke with a 'farang' was about 4 weeks ago when I said 'thank-you' to a young Russian guy who held the lift for me in my Jomtien condo building.  I don't go out of my way to socialise with foreigners in Thailand because most seem to be pot-heads, 'hidden' nutters (who seem quite sociable at first, but then reveal themselves as totally mad), or those many grumpy old men who seem to be suffering from dementia.

Otherwise, I seem only to interact with Thais 🙂on a daily basis.  None seem to be pot-heads, the nutters are quite vocal and easily avoided, and I always get a smile from the old folk when I give them a cheery 'sawadee kap'.

How about you.  Do you live in a farang bubble?  Or a Thai bubble for that matter?

I speak more to my dogs and cat than any other foreigner when back in Isaan.

when traveling speaking occasionally to Thai and  tourists, but very few expats living in Thailand. Expats who Mostly are nutheads, potheads, sexpats, and politically twisted and or conspiracy experts seems the drain me for energy at once they gets going, and it doesn’t take long time before they expose themselves one way or the other

Out of your explanations of your surroundings and an overload of heavy pot smoking Russians, I understand you completely. Same as I said, you must live in one of the worst places. The question, though. Why are you staying there? Will it not be possible to find a better place? Must be terrible living under such circumstances.

How about not at all?

MYOB.

You make my point about expats to avoid, jeez talk about triggered.

If you saw valid points I feel sorry for you, along with your comment that 50% of foreigners are hermits, which is ridiculous, as you see them out every day, and the bar patronage seems to have a lot of them socializing. And the other 50% are nutters? What makes a nutter and how many do you personally know, as 50% is a pretty high amount of the foreigners that live here? I don't get out much, spending my free time with my girlfriend or taking care of my daughter, but I have a group of friends here that hit bars every week, a few times, and what they say to me has them saying there's quite a few of their friends that do the same, which means they aren't hermits. I'm guessing you then think they're the 50% nutters? In all my life I've known hundreds of weed smokers, including yours truly, and have never met any that were mad. A little out there but amicable and safe. I have met a few who did meth that were really out there to me, and proved it later.

Paragraphs would help.

You seem rather isolated, not necessarily a hermit.

Perhaps if you got out more you would see what I see.

I’ll stand by my 50% nutter assessment unit proven otherwise.

Reading many of the posts on AN certainly doesn’t help.
