Sound advice!

Teach them and include a little structure!

Dont modify the bike & be mindful of the laws.

I would be terrified if he went on his friends bikes as a passenger, because he did not have one himself.

My son is 18 and I would never let him ride a motorbike in Thailand. Call me over protective, but after witnessing several teenage motorbike deaths, going to their funerals and seeing the grief and pain on the parents, some of you will understand why.

Yes, but being that 16 year boy, I can understand as well.

Perhaps in a few years, when he's older and more mature, he can make such decisions.

When he's older, more mature and can afford his own motorbike. He'll also realise the value of working for something. If you buy him it, he'll just do the Thai thing of not taking care of it and will try every which way but loose to destroy it.

Does the kid ride with you and his mom on a motorbike? That's generally how the kid's learn from an early age. My kid is 13, when she visits Isaan she rides MB's around the village, but not on the main road. MB's are a way of life here, I'd say get the kid riding around under your supervision. Experience makes him safe.

Also get him started driving a car. 16 is way old enough to get started.

Hi all, I'm living in Ao Nang, Krabi, and facing a common parental dilemma. My 16-year-old son wants a 110cc motorbike, like several of his friends have. However, my health and safety concerns are significant, and I'm strongly inclined against it. He has no prior road experience, and I find the local traffic conditions and driving standards genuinely alarming. As much as he desires a bike, I believe that as a responsible parent, I shouldn't permit it at this time. Perhaps in a few years, when he's older and more mature, he can make such decisions. This situation is causing me considerable stress, and I'd appreciate hearing other perspectives. Am I being overly cautious? Thanks for any input

My GF's 15yr old, just took training and testing to ride a motorbike in Pattaya. Seems like it was a good course as he passsed the DLT test and obtained his 2 year licence. He's a quiet, sensible lad but I do worry about others on the road. If you as OP @Ronkworth can arrange some safety training course then that's valuable. I remember so well the motorcyle safety training I did in the UK in 1983 - it was of benefit in road skills which apply as a 4 wheel driver too.
