Quitting cannabis - my story

As a medical thing. Yes. Do people.shake their leg. Yes.

Is it a syndrome. No.

It is an over-active nervous system (caused by who the hell knows), sending a constant stream of tiny volts down your legs, vibrating the nerves and muscles deep inside them.

After a while, the vibrations from these jolts build up to a very annoying but not painful crescendo, and the only way to stop the jolts is to move your legs. Then after you move them, the buildup of vibrations starts all over again. The feeling is kind of like when someone tickles your foot. You don't normally sit there and let it happen. It's not a painful feeling, but it's annoying enough to make you move. Only with RLS the tickling feeling is on the inside of you legs.

Thank you and very interesting to see a firsthand example of CUD (Cannabis Use Disorder).   Can I ask why you decided to give up?

The withdrawal symptoms you describe are one of the symptoms of Cannabis Use Disorder.    I'm sure you were a high-functioning addict.  You may not think you were an addict but when there ar

Most certainly a recognised condition. I get it occasionally if I'm tired and unable to sleep - it's like something is tickling the muscles, not pleasant at all. I asked my doctor about it many years ago and he said it was quite common and had something to do with an excess of histamine.

Day 74 no cannabis. Finally under the 50 ng/ml.

Note test instructions say no matter how faint or long the line is as long as there is some form of line its a pass.

Quite a bit. If I had to guess an average number it would be at least 10 or so grams a day. Coming from both flower and concentrates.

10 grams a day?

Jesus.

I think most of us here are at some varying level of CUD, but 10g's a day is a basically a joint every 45-60 minutes that you are awake during the day.

Is that accurate to how much you would smoke? Every hour start a new joint?

And some of that comes in the form of concentrates, the OP says, which can have pretty high THC content.

There is "use", and there is "abuse". And 10 grams per day is way worse than a "disorder".

I don't think I've consumed more than 10 grams since legalization (~ 3 years).

You don't have craving, you have withdrawal symptoms.  I've never heard of any having Pussy or Workout withdrawal symptoms.

Pussy withdrawal syndrome is called "masturbation".

Is smoking a pack of cigarettes a day abuse too ?

Might not of been every single day but yes. Wasn't for the entire time I was smoking either. But at the height of it all.

I've smoked for 40+ years and I'm not addicted as such    I can stop whenever I need to with no side effects,  piss testing at work often made it necessary for months at a time    currently a prolonged hospital visit coupled with being evacuated as a war refugee in surin has kept me off it for 3 weeks   No problems at all   However I have always enjoyed it and will continue to do so    consumption around 2g a day  sometimes a bit more lol

Other than the effects I listed quitting has been easy. In fact I still have a bunch of flower and dabs in my fridge. Been there the whole time. 😁

i've occasionally hammered it but i find that a bit self defeating, in so much that the only one i really enjoyed was the first one of the day   i'm sure you know what i mean by that

Thats part of why I quit. Wasn't doing much for me anymore. Plus I quit smoking cigs about 10 years ago and smoking joints started to feel similar.

The smoke was beginning to bother me.

I'm not sure why, but this topic reminded of this classic Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers strip.

I see a number of people talking about smoking weed, and as I've mentioned before, I don’t actually smoke it. I only use a dry herb vaporizer. Occasionally, if I’m in a social setting where a joint is being passed around, I might take a small hit or two just to go along with it, but honestly, I don’t enjoy how the smell sticks to you or how the taste messes with your mouth. I don't mind the smell of other people smoking a joint, but I don't like it on me. I’m also not a fan of consuming anything that’s been burned, and I really don’t like how the smell lingers in my hair and clothes for hours when I smoke it, so that's part of it.

But yesterday, I decided to give smoking a proper go just to get a better sense of it. I didn’t expect to really enjoy it, but I wanted to see how I’d feel after taking four solid hits off a joint. So, I went outside, took my time, fired up a cone that had about 1g of flower in it and smoked about a third of the joint, though afterward, I didn’t feel so great.

I used some weed I have which has a strong lavender terpene profile, thinking it might taste pleasant when smoked, but it wasn’t anything like that. It just tasted like any other typical flower in a joint. It didn’t taste anything like cloves or other herbs that are known for their good flavor. I didn’t cough, but my mouth felt irritated, especially inside my cheeks and throat, and the aftertaste was pretty awful, so I rinsed with some Listerine, which helped a bit.

As for the high, it wasn’t anything special. In fact, it felt weaker than the high I usually get from vaping about 0.2g (4-5 hits) in my vape. Well, live and learn. After about an hour, the high was pretty much gone, and this is some pretty strong flower I was using. With the vape, I normally get a much stronger high from that amount of weed. At least I can say I gave smoking a fair shot though.

On the topic of consumption quantities, I see people here talking about using multiple grams per day. I honestly don’t see how that’s really possible though. Yes, I do use less in a vape because you’re able to extract more THC from smaller amounts of cannabis compared to when smoking, but even on a heavy day, I don’t think I ever exceed 1g. My average is probably around 0.75g per day (or less), and that’s just from vaping, so no smoke, ash, or tar entering my lungs. Meaning, vaping is also much less risky in terms of health, so I could probably do more in a day if I wanted to, but I just don’t feel the need. I guess I really don’t understand how people can go through so much in a day, knowing how unhealthy it is to regularly inhale tar and ash of any kind. Even medical cannabis prescriptions typically average around 1g per day, so I’m curious why some people seem to go through so much more than that.

Anyway, that’s just my two cents. I don’t mean to sound judgmental. I’m just sharing my thoughts, observations, and experiences.

You may not want to call it CUD, but that's what it is.  There are lots of symptoms for CUD and you're exhibiting one of them with withdrawal symptoms.  I think it's useful that those who say "Cannabis is not addictive" can see from your symptoms that they were wrong.  Cannabis can be addictive in about 6% of regular users.

I vaporized every day in the US. And I moved to Thailand and quit cold turkey. Zero symptoms. But I would get buzzed, not wasted. I did not like being "too high." Just a light buzz to help me work, exercise, do chores. And I dropped it with no physical or mental side effects except missing it.

in over 60 years of smoking weed, i have stopped many many times for various reasons over the years

have gone from daily smoking to occasional smoking and back and forth many times.

But would not say, i quit.

45 + years of enjoying  it and I have no wish to quit , but do stop from time to time with no problems at all

just had a 3 week break and kind of  looking forward to a smoke tonight.   My only ongoing "issue" is increasing tolerance but I think its the green skunk type weed  that's the culprit, PGR maybe?

I have no such build up in tolerance with my home grown landrace type weed or indeed "brick"

First off. All comments questions and criticism is encouraged.

I have been an extremely heavy cannabis user for almost 30 years now. I have decided to stop smoking and thought I would share the reality of what I am going through.

Yes I know this is anecdotal and the same things may not happen to others. I'm not here to brag but when you hear people say oh I've been smoking for 20 years etc....I've been high for 30 years. Other than 3 months (when I first arrived In Thailand it was 2003 and finding cannabis in hat yai was a challenge to say the least)  and a few other days here and there i have always been smoking.

I graduated college high. Worked my professional career high. Basically everything high.

I stopped on May 20 so i'm 10 days in now. Yes I know its not a long time but thats not what this is about. Im here to give my unfiltered truth.

It has been very different from when I quit smoking cigs 9 years ago.

Since stopping I have encountered quite a number of withdrawals or side effects. Nauseous. Headaches. Upset stomach. Diarrhea. Loss of appetite. My head still feels quite foggy even after 10 days of 0 use. I have also been experiencing hot and cold flashes.

At times I am finding it hard to concentrate and focus. I have had difficulty sleeping for most of my life so that hasn't changed much. I was sweating profusely at night the first few days. To the point of changing my bed sheets 2 or 3 times a night.

A Thai friend of mine who was in a similar situation quit back in January. He also went through many of the same things I am going through. We were both heavy users.

I dont have the same feeling that I had when i quit cigs. That urge to light up another just isn't there. Neither is that irritating feeling I got when I quit cigs.

I was also a heavy drinker for about 10 years but I haven't been drunk in about 18 years now.  I will have a beer or 2 if I am out in a social setting but never anything more.

I cant say that I'll never smoke a joint again as I dont know where life will take me. Still only 48 so many years to go. I do know however I will never return to being such a heavy smoker.

I am In good health. Never spent a night in the hospital. All my doctor checks turn out in normal healthy ranges. Im 5 10 and weigh about 175lbs. I dont have anything like a smokers cough. That stopped shortly after I quit cigs. I have normal lung capacity as per my health records. I have a decent diet and walk 4km almost daily.....always high 🤣

Hopefully sharing this can help show that for people like me quitting did in fact have withdrawals and side effects. My thai friend said it went away for him after about 2 weeks.

That's my story. Puff puff pass.

Heavy pot user.
Heavy alcohol user.
Heavy cigarette smoker.
Heavy salt user.
Heavy sex fanatic.
Heavy eater.

And if you quit cold turkey after smoking a lot of pot over an extended period of time, you'll have issues.  You made your body dependent, now it needs to re-balance.  Over time the issues will resolve.

Here's the key 🗝️Moderation

Don't become a victim of your own habits. Exert self control and life can be good.
Occasional spiff.
A couple of beers or glasses of wine.
A cigarette or two a day - better yet, none at all.
Moderate salt on your food.
Moderation is sexual affairs.
Don't stuff yourself like pig day in and day out.  Save the food orgies for Thanksgiving.

Moderation baby - then you won't be going through withdrawals from any habit.  Hang in there, you'll recover.

Once you recover, limit your cannabis use to social settings.

Tried smoking a couple of cigarettes a day - then got addicted.

Pot must be the same. Most people think they can smoke a joint ocassionally, but like any drug it must take over you and then you lose control. Or maybe some can, but not all.

Wow 5 pages huh?

Mountains out of mole hills folks. Smoked from when I was 14, to 56 when i had some life changes, dropped it no problem.

5 years later, Covid, no bar scenes, concerts, nothing, picked it back up again, bored out of my skull might as well be stoned.

I wonder how many IQ points you dropped between 14 and 26?

I guess we will never know.
