Is this how mobile banking works here? You put in the amount manually?

Can be done different ways:

1. - Shop registers the amount in their cash register machine and that amount automatically shows if the customer scans the shop QR. Customer now hits 'ENTER' and the funds transfer happens instantly if there's enough funds in the customers bank account.

- Further to 1. - above, some bank apps allow the customer to enter a new amount. Example, customer wants to add 20Baht ot whatever as a tip. Then ENTER.

- 2. - Or the shop may have it set up so the amount shows on a separate small screen and the shop assistant points this out to the customer. Customer scans the main QR code for the shop but there's no amount owing showing on the customers bank app. Customer now manually enters the amount owing and hits 'ENTER'. If there's enough funds the transfer of the funds to the shop happens instantly.

Maybe some banks have more 'systems' ...

It's often the customers using the points cards rather than paying by phone that take longer. Apart from the odd shop whose QR code takes forever to scan, paying by QR is very simple.

I never carry cash anymore but that's because I'm always losing my wallet so I don't carry one. It doesn't suit everyone but it works for me. Cardless withdrawals also appeal. The only place where I need cash to pay is 7-11 and passing them by because of this actually saves me a bit of cash each day.

Is it not just as easy to lose you phone?

Probably. Personal thing with me. Sunglasses, wallet, keys...always manage to leave them and walk off.

Phone, for some reason it is like another limb. I'm constantly aware of where it is. If it's not on me somewhere something kicks in.

But somewhere to put an expensive mobile phone. Too much hassle to slip a couple of notes in the phone case ?

Where do cyclists put their passports?

The café explained that the customers had ordered two cups of coffee, totalling THB 221.50, but mistakenly transferred THB 22,150. Staff believe the error occurred during a mobile banking transaction, possibly due to a misplaced decimal point.

Honesty is the best policy....

Not if you scan a QR code.

I often scan the QR code and have to enter the amount manually - last time being yesterday at an upmarket coffee shop on Sukhumvit, near Emsphere.

(Duc du Praslin, where they give you a free Belgian chocolate with every beverage - vault le detour)

Where are the basic survival skills which are required to thrive in this world, and to travel without being taken advantage of? They either didn't they look at the amount they scanned or entered it manually, you would think one way or the other they would pick up the mistake before paying.

It depends if the QR code is generated for the specific transaction. Sometimes it's just a standard QR code for any transaction into the same account.

With small stores and coffee shops, some Lazada delivery riders, bars and restaurants.

The QR codes pay direct to their personal bank accounts.

I find that quite a compelling reason to use cash.

Because when out cycling you carry as little as possible.

Mobile phone is needed for mapping, so might as well use it as your wallet.

Would you really want me to pay you with a wet sweaty 100bht note I pulled out of my cycling shorts?

Most cycling jerseys have multiple pockets in the back. But, any notes still get sweaty.

Yeah but it can be replaced and no money lost other than the cost of the original phone. Lose a wallet and the cash inside is gone

I just put some cash, a credit card, and my ID in my under the seat bag when out cycling.  Doesn't get all sweaty that way.  I also carry two tubes, tyre levers, reading glasses, and disposable gloves in that same bag.  Works very well for me.

And that's what happens when Europeans or South Americans learn the importance of a decimal point, viz a viz a comma when separating whole numbers.  :coffee1:

Agreed. I once paid 100x my electricity bill due to my european keyboard using , instead of . as a decimal point. Kasikorn bank still ignores , as a decimal point.

Cycling shorts don't have pockets.

This story doesn't make sense. The shop owner is blaming the customer for the error of what amount was entered into the Cafes EFTPOS. It's the owner that enters the amount and thus the owner stuffed up. Most people when they swipe their card do not look at the amount on the EFTPOS. Sounds more likely the owner whether by accident or ON PURPOSE is covering his a..ss

I have to enter the amount at bars, restaurants, pharmacy, almost eveywhere.  I'm glad I'm not in your situation.

I used to own a business in Australia. No customers here enters the amount. It's the business that enters the amount in an EFTPOS whether by POS system or manually. Aside from that when I'm in Thailand and paying the hotel for the room, or any other business that has an EFTPOS they do the same. They enter the fee. What stores do you go to so I can go to them and enter say 10 Baht instead of 1000 Baht for the fee? They would go broke in a week! The fact is you only,  as a customer, do is check the amount shown on the EFTPOS to see if it is correct and then if so swipe your card and type in your password if required!
