Take a look at this cow that I snapped next to my house...

 

 

That's what all the cows seem to look like in Thailand - thin, certainly not much beef on that animal.

 

What is the point of breeding cows like this?  It's not a dairy cow...

 

Why are there no large, sturdy beef cows?

 

Where are all the dairy cows?

 

I'm confused as to why cattle look so emaciated in Thailand.

There are plenty on Soi 6...

it is the breed which suits the climate here.

And the feed which is just whatever grows naturally in the paddocks which isn’t optimum. 
That is actually what cows should look like.

Like the house chickens also, totally different to the factory farmed chickens.

Dairy cows are only in certain parts of Thailand, mainly Nakhon Ratchasima, Saraburi, Lopburi, Ratchaburi, Chiang Mai and Prachuap Khiri Khan. My guess is that only there you find large green grass areas.

Perhaps it is a lack of nutrients in the grass or soil.

Aberdeen Angus would be dead of heatstroke within a month. 

Rice chaff has nowhere near the calories of hay. They're underfed from the environment lol. Also, a fat cow would die of heat exhaustion pretty quick out here. I hear there are some pretty enterprising Thais out there breeding Angus, but you're not gonna see em on the side of the road anytime soon

Plenty of big healthy dairy cows in Chock Chai farms just outside Bangkok.

Brangus  or Angus bred to Brangus worked in the humid Texas heat

Available nutrition or the lack thereof like another mentioned.Texas is hotter on average than Thailand and has healthy, fat filled out cows everywhere.

Excuse me? Oct/Nov/Dec/Jan/Feb/March/April are hotter than Thailand?

I cycle past many fat buffalo and thin cows every day.

Usually in field full of grass, often in the same fields.

Can only assume it's the genetics that cause the weight variations.

 

Same with my rabbits, 2 fat, 1 thin, (different breeds) same food available, and if anything the thin one eats 2x as much as the fat ones.

Lot of cattle in north east Australia and the Northern Territory too where its similar heat to Thailand

Plenty of big fat Holsteins out where I live in Lamphun.  And not all of the ox look like that.  Whatever those animals are grazing on isn't very nutritious.  Most of the free grazing ox in our areas don't look malnourished like that.

I think it's more about where they shop and what they eat.

Hotter yearly on average .February through October are very hot, sometimes extremely. I remember when over a month it was 100F or more every day. In the 90's all the time. October through February it gets cold, but not for long. You'll have days of 30 degrees and sometimes lower, but in two days it'll be back to 80. I've been hunting in November in thermal clothes and underwear and  three days later in a light cotton one piece camo outfit sweating.

Somewhat true but the range conditions are far more diverse and rich than here, with more of what cows need. That's why Texas is a leader in cattle production. They also supplement feed all over, giving them a lot more than just natural feed. 

A simple item like a salt block is unheard of here. Besides those parasite infested cows in Isaan there's some good looking sturdy cattle around.

It's the same thing for dogs, cats and children here. Some care enough to give them what they need more than want, and some couldn't be bothered. They like puppies and kittens here but when they turn into dogs and cats they're left to roam and breed and cause a nuisance. I see some walking their cattle and buffaloes daily, making sure they get enough to eat, and they're filled out, but a large percentage are left to eat whatever the rice fields harvested have and are malnourished. And yes, a salt block can help in this type of climate,replacing minerals and maintaining hydration. 

The cow you see on the sides of the road and whatnot are thin because they are not fed, they only graze on weeds. 

 

If you have never been, and particularly if you have kids, you should visit "Farm Chokchai". 

 

Been years since I've been, but it's a dairy, and they have a cowboy show, you can milk cows with the kids, they have other animals and the food's okay. It's a fun day.

Need additional forage to be healthy. Even during rain season we give our sheep extra forage to keep their weight up

Buffalo is in their right habitat here in Thailand, and most breeders know what they need.

I wouldn't assume anything I didn't have proof of. I'm sure many free roaming animals have parasites, but that's still because people let them breed, roam, and cause a nuisance. Animals can't fix themselves or take medicines. That's where their owners come in. Animals left to the wild act like, animals. Animals that are loved and appreciated act like well cared for, loving animals. Just like people. Look at how many crimes there are daily here. The reason starts at home.
