A harrowing explosion unfolded yesterday in Chon Buri as a lorry laden with gas cylinders overturned, unleashing fireballs nearly 10 metres high into the sky. The incident occurred around 3pm on June 9, along Route 344 near Ban Bueng district's Nong Chak intersection. The vehicle, a pickup truck packed with liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders, lost control, tipped over, and instantly ignited a massive blaze.

 

Responding swiftly, four fire engines from the Nong Chak Subdistrict Municipality and Nong Irun Subdistrict Administrative Organisation, alongside police rescue teams and local volunteers, converged on the scene. As the fire escalated, multiple gas cylinders exploded, compelling firefighters to exercise extreme caution amid the perilous conditions.

 

Eyewitnesses described the inferno as towering over nearby buildings, with reverberating explosions adding to the chaos. Police halted traffic and cautioned drivers to decelerate, mitigating potential risks as crews worked tirelessly to extinguish the flames. It took approximately an hour to wrestle the fire under control.

 

Reduced to a scorched metal husk, the lorry was completely consumed by the fire. The driver, a 40-year-old named Ek, sustained injuries and reported widespread pain. Reflecting on the incident from the roadside, he recounted the terrifying sequence of events. "I was transporting cooking gas from Map Khlong to deliver to a customer on the Nong Chak–Phanat Nikhom road. I lost control of the vehicle, it overturned, and then exploded," Ek explained. "I managed to get out just in time and ran to the side of the road."

 

 

In the aftermath, firefighters and police identified at least 20 LPG cylinders, each weighing 40 kilogrammes, amidst the wreckage, with four having exploded. Additionally, 23 oxygen tanks were recovered, adding to the incident's volatility.

 

Police have initiated an investigation to determine the accident's cause and scrutinise the safety measures associated with transporting flammable materials. Although no fatalities were reported, the explosion sparked significant panic and traffic disruption in the area.

 

This incident highlights the critical need for rigorous safety protocols when handling and transporting hazardous materials, underscoring the potential risks vehicles pose on busy roads if these guidelines are not strictly adhered to.

Carrying dangerous goods around in the back of a modified pickup while the driver speeds and drives recklessly is never going to end well.

Sure... he was driving along a perfectly straight road... within perfectly safe speeds given the loads and volatility of the loads he was carrying, fully alert....

Its amazing this doesn't happen more often. Those guys on bikes wifh the cooking gas on the back are loaded time bombs.

There are numerous scenarios as to how the vehicle veered off the road, but A-Hole Thai bashers always default to reckless driving.
