Are you blind? There are lots of pedestrian walkways and pedestrian crossings. Just road users don’t pay attention to them.

Pedestrian crossings in Thailand do not have the same "road rules" as in western countries. Stand at a pedestrian crossing without traffic lights in Thailand waiting to cross and it's up to motorists to decide whether they want to stop or not. Overseas it is commonly compulsory, by law, to stop. And in Thailand, even if a car, or cars have stopped there's always the chance a motorcyclist comes whizzing though those stationary cars.

 

My attitude in Thailand while crossing a road in Thailand is always give way to motorists whether your at a pedestrian crossing or not. If you don't do this you may be the party to lose out, maybe with your life.

In the UK people people who want to use a zebra crossing just put a foot on it and the vehicles will stop.

It is a mental disease. It comes down to third world mentality and the Darwinian survivor of the fittest mindset. Hence when driving the mentality is I need to get to my destination quick. I am stronger than the pedestrian therefore it only makes sense for the weak to yield. When I drive I will not yield to allow another car to get in front of me because I’m in the position of power to decide that and I will decide in my favor. I find it incredible that people do not watch out for themselves when passing a ZEBRA crossing! Even here in Europe people just wanders straight into the street without watching if cars coming are aware of them passing!! People get killed all the time at these crossings! In Thailand they have been neglected by everyone for decades! How on earth would anyone believe that things could change over night??? Use traffic lights at these crossings! That would help!

Traffic lights and Stop signs do not stop the drivers, are you new here?!  I can walk out in a Zebra crossing, be more than half way across, and they are still trying to run me over.. I'm literally stuck in the middle of the road with no way out...IT'S INSANE!

I really don't believe that the number of pedestrian deaths is as low as 500 per year, considering the overall death toll on the roads is close to 20,000.

Yes, whether you're walking or driving, don't ever expect Thai drivers to obey the rules of the road. Most do, but there are still many that drive their cars like they are riding a motorbike, and don't pay any attention to lanes, traffic rules (like stopping for pedestrians), or even traffic lights.

Why would anyone, Thai or otherwise, open their car door to traffic.  Passengers yes but most traffic is too large to go through a car door unless it's a small motorbike!

Absolutely spot on. This is why I ride my motorbike! While walking I am invisible to vehicle drivers!

Over 5,000 pedestrian deaths?  Amazing Thailand.  I do recall slow seasons in Pattaya many years ago when one could actually cross beach road easily
